I was looking at HGH results and saw Protection listed as "Pronounced" and "Present".

What is the difference between the two and how is that tested for the HGH title?

Thank you,
Sara

Philiip, under the new forum rules you are not allowed personal attacks.  That was very rude.

Instead of saying something mean and offensive, why don't you tell me what is required to achieve a Protection Pronounced versus a Protection Present label and how they go about testing for protection in an HGH event?

Thank you,
Sara

you could try checking out the "sv" website,or google "schutzhund" and possibly find some guidelines concerning "pronounced or present"...i'm not feeling up to going on a showline/workingline rant(or am i)...there are numerous examples of protection work at the major"conformation" shows in germany and the united states on youtube....there is also plenty of video from the big "working trials"(lga's,nationals,awdf,wusv,fci)...the "showline" dogs are expected to do the protection work, and graded either "pronounced or present",but i guess it's all in your personal opinion about which presents a better picture..i'm not a judge, but i know what i like.i've seen some great "showline dogs"in the protection phase,i've seen some workingline dogs that were barely adequate, but most of the time it's the other way around...i've seen dogs that barely stayed in the same zip code get a rating of "present"...go figure?

Hi, Vom. Thanks for your reply.  So, in HGH events the protection is the same as a ScH trial?  Wow!  I didn't realize that the HGH dogs do the full ScH protection phases but I think that is really cool!!!  Maybe instead of the obedience and tracking they herd and then they do the regular ScH phases. I just couldn't find a loy of information about the HGH protection as I didn't realize it was the full ScH trial protection tests....

I did google for Schutzhund as you suggested and found the "prounced" versus "present" requirements under Breed Survey Regulations but they seem awfully open to interpretation like you suggested!!

I didn't find any separate HGH protection so I am assuming the herding dogs must also do the:
1) Surprise Attack with Guarding
2) Attack, Fight, and Guarding
3)Release

In case anyone else was wondering here is what I found from the USA site:

"6.6.  Protection Work Scoring – Evaluation of Instinctive Behavior, Self-Confidence, and Ability to Cope with Stress (TSB)
6.6.1.  The overall rating of the protection exercises is scored as “pronounced,” “present,” or “insufficient.”
6.6.2.  Pronounced: Self-confident, intense, goal-oriented and secure gripping and holding, no negative reactions to the stick hits, and close and attentive watching in the guarding phases.
6.6.3.  Present: Deficiencies, for example, in self-confidence, in goal-oriented behavior, in grip and stick behavior, as well as in the guarding phases.
6.6.4.  Insufficient: Lacking self-confidence, strong deficiencies with respect to hardness, and disinterest in the helper." link: http://germanshepherddog.com/regulations/breed_survey_regulations.htm

Thank you,
Sara
