I want to add canned fish to my dogs diet, however, the canned fish is cooked, with bones, is this a problem?  I know you arnt supposed to ever feed cooked bones, is canned fish an exception?  Thanks!

Well they are supposed to be eatable but my guys barfed them up so what I did was put the canned fish in a strainer and picked out the larger bones, rinsed the fish then fed; specifically I am talking about canned salmon;  I have fed other canned fish with no problem except it is loaded with salt that is why I rinsed it off thorooughly; otherwise go for it.  You can also buy frozen fish fillets;  I rinsed those off and posched;  I am not too keen on feeding raw fish.  So I buy frozen fillets and poach slightly and since they are human grade usually they don't have bones.  Worked great.  Nan

To the best of my knowledge the bones in canned Salmon are perfectly safe for dogs and people too of course... I have never read or heard anything contrary..I feed canned Salmon and my male absolutely loves it bones and all...:)

Canned salmon with bones should be just fine (the process of canning the salmon de-mineralizes the bones partially), & as a bonus, it is always wild-caught, not farm raised. Fresh salmon should always be cooked because it may contain parasites that are very damaging, & liver flukes, etc.. When salmon is served as sashimi it is first frozen to a specific temperature & held at that temp to kill the parasites (which live as cysts in the flesh). Filets home frozen may or may not be safe to consume raw. I'm sure that some one else here may have more knowledge on frozen salmon, & it's safety. But with canned salmon, no worries! And very healthy. My dogs go nuts for it, & we two footers eat it as well! jackie harris

I feed fresh salmon carcasses with no issues.  (North atlantic salmon, not pacific salmon that carry the fluke)  I also feed tinned sardines and pilchards. (My lot prefer them in tomato sauce rather then oil)
