http://www.northlandsnewscenter.com/news/local/Hunters-Allegedly-Kill-Two-German-Shepherds-on-Iron-Range-133847598.html

This is an outrage and once you read the article I think you will agree.  I can't believe the Authorities continue to investigate the case and say the hunters could face charges of damage to private property  and this is the only thing that these hunters can be charged with at this time.  Certainly a crime.  I was sent this article along with the owners contact information by someone we know.  They had hoped that others would be able to help the owner of these two shepherds replace them or help in some way.  I do not know if they would be ready for a replacement until the problem is resolved and the hunters are prosecuted for the actions of killing the shepherds so as this won't occur again.  In any case I thought I would share this story and see what everyone else thinks.

Not saying It's right, but that is why I have 6' fence around my property. Lesson learned. Of they were kids, you'd think, "how horrible". But you would question why kids were wandering off unsupervised. Any who lives in an area that can be hunted knows not to let their animals wander. Stupidity on both sides! Hunter was probably pissed his deer were getting spooked and the owner was negligent. Buy a fricken fence.

Been there. 12 years ago we let our Rottie and Rat Terrier out for a potty break. Dogs never left the property, but did not necessarily stay close to the house (I own 25 acres)    The terrier returned, the Rottie did not. This was NOT during gun season for deer. 2 weeks later, our neighbor  asked if it was OK if hunting took them across our property. We allowed this as they are good friends, and very respectful of our property. While hunting, they came across Annie's body. She had been shot thru the spine. Shooter had removed her collar (with her tags) so she could not be ID'd, but not enough time had passed and weather was too cold for body to rot into nothing. She was shot ON OUR PROPERTY, by someone who was obiviously poaching. She was in the woods but no where near the property line. The injury would have meant instant paralysis (if not death) as the spine was severed. We brought her out of the woods and gave her a proper burial.

While we were pretty sure we knew who did it, again, no proof. However, the a-hole who lived down the street said he saw our dog shot in the woods (he did NOT have permission to be in our woods). When my husband asked how he knew it was our dog (we were not the only Rottie owners around) he became vague and changed the subject. Later he asked my husband what we would do if we ever found out who shot her. Hubby was very explicit on what HE would do to the person, and it didn't involve the 'Law". 2 weeks later the guy put his house up for sale, and sold it below market value.

Annie was very gentle, non-agressive, non-confrontational. She loved everybody. The rat terrier would have been a bigger bite threat. For weeks afterwards the terrier would not go more than about 20 feet from the house. When someone shot a gun she would hide under the bed. She was there when her BFF was shot.

Some people have no respect for another's property.

We know of several simular occurances.
We were told about 2 years ago about a hunter shot 2 beloved gsds right in front of the owner
on his own posted proerty, in the woods, upstate ny, near albany. no charges filed- no proof,
About 2 uears ago, a  buyer of one of our pups, in fact, her husband is a lawyer,
a nieghbour, hunting, shot her gsd,
not sure why , but no charges filed. (the new  pup 2 years later is still doing great.)
and just recently, in easton , ny,  great pyroness, very gentle dod, was shot and thrown in a ditch, her
collar atolen. reported in todays bennington banner, 11-16-11
yes we personally have lots 5 foot and electric fencing.
some states the laws are not strong enough.
if we dont like the laws, we have to put pressure to change laws.
the press, letters to editor, etc etc

In many states, NY included a dog chasing deer is fair game to be shot.  Many hunters are idiots and shoot farmers cows and goats every deer season along with dogs.  It is very a very tragic and sad story for the dog and owner.  I agree with Chaz and wouldn't let my dogs out anywhere that wasn't fenced if they were unsupervised.

 Years ago:

I have a little half acre woods right up against my house that my neighbor owns. My dogs are never out of the kennels unless I or my wife are out also. Just as dawn breaks one morning I hear 3 loud shot gun shots. My bedroom window is 80 feet from the woods so it sounds as if there in bed with me. Long story short, I thru a 30 clip in my AR and unloaded it in a couple tree,s in the woods off my back porch I never heard so much screaming and hollering in my life. I latter got a call from the land owner appoligizing for the 2 who were there. Now the land owner has several "No Hunting" sign,s on that woods.

If my dogs had been running around in the woods as they do when I,m out and the idiots would of shot them... I,d of burned down the woods with the hunters in it.

 P.S.

I,m a avid hunter and gun owner.

Wow I did not know that in NY this law was as such.  We have a fence around our property, yet many people use the electric fencing in our area. As we know these electric fences can malfunction allowing the dog to roam.  I agree a fence is the best preventitive, yet it is disheartning to know that there are such irresponsible individual hunters that would not hunt properly, as to only kill and aim at the game they are out to hunt.  Hunting is a sport as is Schutzhund, and there is proper ettiquette and rules in every sport.  I am glad everyone agrees this is an outrage and a sad situation.
