You never saw the dogs parents?
Looks like a fine dog in the picture, but that's about all I would care to venture.

Not a bicolor. Appears b&t American lines...but American lines were based on something else way back, so who knows?

Melanistic B&T/ German Show "Highlines" (Weinerau, Canto, Mutz) is my best guess.

I would love to see a side picture of him standing if you have one.
He looks very well behaved, and if I had to guess his bloodlines I would say working lines mixed with American, not any show lines, maybe search & rescue dogs in his background, or obedience stars.
Looking at the width of his front legs, I tend to see American lines, as some German bred dogs seem to be wider in the front, then again, he could have Belgian lines in his background, those are some really nice dogs.
Do you know the names of his parents?
Very handsome and alert, love his markings, he would be considered a black & tan.
Is that a poop bag on his collar in the last picture, I do that sometimes so we don't loose it!
