I know that european countries are using the ISO chip. But do you have to have one when you go and compete with your dog from USA to Europe? Or is a ragular chip acceptable if that person brings its own scanner?

That's a good question.  Looking at the regulations to enter Europe it says that the dog must be clearly identified with a readable tattoo or microchip.  It doesn't state anything about type of chip or scanners.  http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/identification/pets/index_en.htm

Home again has a chip that can be read both here and in Europe :) It's called the Travel chip http://www.microchipidsystems.com/cgi-bin/mcmp08/rtl/phd.cgi?Autoincrement=000196&tag_rf=The%20TRAVELchip%C3%A2%E2%80%9E%C2%A2&dsply_name=The%20TRAVELchip%20Single For whatever reason the usual tools aren't coming up so I can't make the link active. Dunno ? Melissa

The type of chip you have, regardless of location, is not the issue.
You must have a reader that can accurately read the chip wherever you trial or show your dog.

Thanks for the responses. Its a tricky thing. Seems like the ISO chip is necessary to enter european countries. My friends dog currently has an Avid chip, she wanted to avoid to have him double chipped.

You could go the alternate route and just get a tattoo?  That way you don't have to worry about anything?
