i bought a 2 yr old gsd bitch 5 months ago, from a 'breeder' i use this term lightly as i now think it was more of a puppy farm than anything else, as comet had already had 1 litter by 18 months old and has had half of one ear bitten off by another dog :( .
When i brought comet home she was nervous of everyone and was really bad on the lead. now she has started showing her true side (friendly loving) but she is still a demon on the lead, her recall isnt great either and has run out onto a busy rd in the past. when on the lead she will constantly pull, i have tried stop and start, a long lead, a gentle leader all to no avail, she wont have treats while out so treat work wont do any good. also when she see's another dog she goes mental to get to them ( whining and howling when on lead) nothing i do seems to calm her down. she also gets over excited when she knows she's going on a walk, can anyone help??? there are no training classes in my area either, so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance kim x

First off get rid of that darn gentle leader. It is time to put a proper training collar on her.  Put it right up behind her ears.  Instant power steering.  You really need a trainer to help you with a kennel dog.  She simply hasnt  been handled so you need to start at the basics just as you would with a new puppy.  Way to much info to help you over the net.

pinch collar!

Definitely a pinch collar. It will make correcting her much easier for you and (believe it or not) gentler on the dog. Also, I wouldn't let my dog off leash unless his/her recall is solid, and to achieve that, I eventually always use an e collar. I'm sure there are some good private trainers in your area, you may want to ask one for some help.

Kim,
Why did you buy the dog in the first place, I am just curious.

Second,
what is your experience with the breed and do you have any experience training a dog?

Third,
do not start yanking on a pinch or god forbid purchase a shock collar until you know how to use them properly.

I'd go so far as to say do not attempt to use an e-collar period.

Fourth,
What are your plans here, is this a pet or did you have other goals in mind?

I can tell you that you need to start at the beginning and that shortcuts will fail.
Begin with the dog knowing it's name and coming when called using rewards as your first step.

That's all I would say until I knew more about your situation, but there is much more to do

Moons.
