What do you feed your dogs?

by Jyl on 06 July 2011 - 05:07
My male is eating the Taste of the Wild lamb formula and my female is eating Kirkland Chicken and rice adult formula. They both have very nice coats and good stool. My male is retired, as he is 8 years old. My female I am still doing Schutzhund with, she is 5 years old. She has great energy level.

Thankyou.
Currently I feed castor & Pollux natural ultramix, but it is no longer available in my area. That leaves me with either switching brands or ordering direct from the manufacturer. I've looked into both brands you mentioned, my dogs did like Kirkland brand, but I hesitate to use taste of the wild due to the meat meal in it. I considered raw, but had to rule that out due to one dog (a rat terrier) with severe beef & milk product allergies, and another that has epilepsy so is on limited ingredients as well.
Thankyou for sharing what you feed, it helps me in figuring out what to do.

I have had GREAT results with the Taste of the Wild (TOTW). My male Aiko, who just turned 8 years old has an awsome coat on it. My mom is feeding the TOTW salmon to her dog. I really like the TOTW because it is grain free. I have only fed the Pacific Stream (Salmon) and the Sierra Mountain (Lamb) formulas. I havent tried the other 2 formulas because I personally do not want to feed a food that has that high of a protein content. I like the stay in the 25% range on protein. I am by no means saying the other two formulas are bad, it is just my personal preferance. As for the "meat meal" in the TOTW, they use a VERY high quality meat and the "meat meal" is protein specific... meat meal just means that the water has been removed.
As to the Kirkland. It is also made by Diamond.. the same company that makes the TOTW. The Kirkland is a very good quality food. The price is very good... I use the chicken and rice formula for Xena (my female). The bags are 40 pounds and are $24 a bag, that is an AWSOME price for a bag of good quality dog food. I have a friend that has been feeding the Kirkland lamb and rice formula to her German Shepherds for 15+ years and her dogs are always in great health and have awsome coats.

Nature's Domain (generic TOTW salmon sold at Costco) and supplement with raw. Very pleased with this food. I used to feed Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice, but decided to go grain free. Costco also sells Kirkland's Chicken and Rice (generic Diamond Naturals). Nature's Domain is $34.72 for 35 pounds at Costco; Kirkland's Chicken and Rice is about $24 for 40 pounds at Costco.

As far as kibbles go, I feed any of the following (I get it from a friend): California Natural, Fromm, Earthborn, Taste of the Wild. Sometimes I toss the dog raw meat (human grade stuff we no longer want, often venison), table scraps, RMBs from a friend, leftovers about to go bad. They also get beef marrow bones on occasion. I have no dogs with allergies or any conditions such as EPI, SIBO, IBS, etc. They eat what I give them whether it's raw, good quality kibble, or human leftovers. They are all very healthy, great coats, no smell, good teeth. I believe in variety and moderation, within reason (and by reason I mean what I can afford!). I do not supplement other than salmon oil in the winter when it's very cold and dry. If their diet is lacking something one day, it will make up for it the next.

Right now I feed Professional Active, it's not grain free but it's under $40, has decent meat content, no chemical preservatives and it's 30% protein/20% fat and also has glucosamine and chondroitin. Whatever you choose make sure it doesn't have the chemical preservatives BHA/BHT, ethoxyquin (fist preservative, not always on the ingredients list, need to get a statement from the makers) and Propyl Gallate, and remember that the first ingredient in dog food is mostly water so the second ingredient is actually first. I also provide supplements because NO kibble, even premium has enough nutrients...I give salmon oil (Wholistic Salmon Oil brand, very cheap), probiotics, enzymes, vitamin C/E, kelp and alfalfa on occasion. Other brands I have used are Wellness CORE, Wellness Super5Mix, Blue Buffalo, Innova, Artemis, Fromm Four Star.
I just saw Nature's Domain at Costco's the other day, was interested in it because it's grain free but it's new so I don't quite trust it, and the meat content is pretty much zero if you look at it.
My dogs never did well on TOTW but some do.

For those that feed raw but use a meat other than a beef product where do you get your meats?
Other than calcium supplements how would I make sure the allergic dog had enough, she cannot eat dairy products? Just a little history on her... she was rescued, at the time of her rescue she was on a raw food diet that was causing her many issues due to the beef and dairy allergies.
I'd prefer to continue feeding something all the dogs can eat rather than buying seperate foods for each dog. They don't like natural balance limited ingredient diet, or blue Buffalo..
