Hello,
I'd like to microchip my puppies before sending them into new homes. I had some questions for people who do this.
Do you register the microchip to you first (your kennel or your name?)? Do you put the puppys new owner as the second contact?
Do you not put them down as a contact at all?
What microchip do you use and why?

Thank you!
Erin

My vet uses the ResQ brand. It's read by any ISO complient scanner.

I microchip them in my name. The new owners get the paperwork to change it into their names if they'd like.
ResQ has customer service they can call and there is also an online database.

Shady.

I use AVID chips, they are not international, but they work fine here and most vets and animal controls can read them.  They come with leaflets about registering and certificates.  I give these to the new puppy owners, I don't specifically register them to myself, but AVID keeps records of who buys them so I can be traced if one of my pups is found at any point during their lives.

My AVID chipped dogs have also travelled to the UK with me and the scanners there can read them so not a big deal that they are not international.

I use HomeAgain chips. I register them all to myself first and provide info for new owners to change the information.
