Ginny, a3 for German hip certification means "noch zugelassen", or "still allowed". Check out this dog, who, if he had not been bred because of his noch zugelassen hips, we would not have Ursus von Batu, Ghandi von Arlett, Yasko vom Farbenspiel, Larus von Batu, etc. (there are a TON of VA1 dogs from this line): http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/89.html There are also dogs who are a3, noch zugelassen who have come back OFA GOOD!!! Here's just one example: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/9734.html (Zeus vom Friedenspark, who is a3, noch zugelassen) and here is his OFA report (at 57 MONTHS!!!!!) where he received his OFA GOOD hips and elbows!: http://offa.org/display.html?appnum=607487#animal This just goes to show how much of a discrepancy there is with OFA, and is one of the many reasons I prefer an "a" stamp over OFA certification. So, I guess I would have to say (in my opinion) it DEPENDS on the dog you have. What does the dog have to offer to the breed? Certainly you can show the dog! It's fun, it's something to do with your dog, and regardless of whether you want to breed that dog or not, it's definitely a good experience to go through. Lastly, don't let others choose your path! You must choose what is okay with you, and then you go with it. Each person was given the ability to make a decision, although so many times, it is easy to make decisions for other people when you are not in their shoes. Good luck!

VomFel, Very Nicely Done !!! ginny, if you walk away with nothing else VomFel said, remember the last paragraph at least !! I for one will not breed anything other than Excellent, or Good, OFA rated hips and normal elbows. However I have seen Fair and even Poor hips produce (and I mean direct son or daughter) Excellent rate when properly paired with mate. I do not put anyone down for breeding a Fair hip, will I do it, No. Does that mean you should not ? NO. You must do what you feel is right, you litterally wear your shoes, Not me, Not VolFel, Not anyone else in the world but you (and possibly the kidlets if they're like mine LOL) Only thing at all I would advise that you use caution when choosing a mate. I hope that is appropriate thing to say. Best of Luck ! :-)

EchoMeadows I think to many people put to much into OFA. You say you WOULD NOT breed to an OFA Fair. I have a male with OFA Fair and I have the xray and i've had 4 vets look at his xray and they all agree he should have went good. if i sent this xray in again would it go good? maybe maybe not. i think it depends on which set of vets read the xray for one. This male is an excellent male and has many titles, and is a service dog. do i not breed him because he has a OFA fair? i think not. but it all depends on the person looking for a good stud dog.myself my xrays will be sent in for a a stamp from now on.....

You may have worse results with a stamp. If I were you I believe you are able to re-submit that X ray for re-evaluation to OFA. Perhaps the 4 vets you had look at that X ray can give you their opinion in writing that you can send along with your re-submission.

I already have. these are not just old country vets they do a lot of xrays and know what they see.and i may send them back in later.

jbrown, But if you read my entire post... As I said it may not be the way others do it and I don't put them down for it, I have seen ofa Poor produce ofa excellent, So for you to breed your fair rate is what is right for you to do. I won't and that is what is right for Me. am I saying you should not ? absolutely Not, I would never say that as I have seen the results of rated hips when properly mated produce fantastic results. I just was trying to point out "Each individual must do what he/she feels is the right thing when trying to continue to improve the breed" My right for me may not be right for you, but does not mean that your right is wrong !

EchoMeadows I didnt mean anything bad about what you said just making a point. My boy is 3 now and i've not breed YET. I may use him for breeding and may not. i know i have people on a waiting list waiting for females to come into heat but right now i'm just having a blast showing him and working him....we are just starting to show in Agility and that boy loves that almost as much as he loves to track...

by EchoMeadows on 28 September 2006 - 15:09

That's awesome ! Keep up the great work and I wish you full success with him, He sounds like a real gem. the most important thing you just brought to the table with him is that your having a blast with him, too many breeder/trianers don't do anything other than Show/Title these dogs, they often are not they're loved pets, they are often kept in kennel's crates for majority of time until it's time to go to work. I myself enjoy my dogs company first and work secondly. First and foremost loved family "Members" yes they need to do they're job too, (protect family, detection, SAR, K-9, and so on.) Anyway love to hear that you have an attatchment with this boy and wish you all the best. :-)
