I've been reading this Rex saga and over and over again have read that the dog arrived with fleas and was given a flea bath, etc. It got me wondering if perhaps some people haven't heard of Capstar? I started using it on a vet's recommendation for rescues that showed up flea infested several years ago and never looked back. One pill and 30 minutes later the fleas are dying; most or all will be dead in 4 hours; far more effective than any flea bath I've ever given and the dog given Capstar will be flea free before the dog given a flea bath will be completely dry with no smell or residue.

I keep a box on hand here to give to dogs that show up for boarding. If I see evidence of fleas upon arrival I will show the owner and get permission to give a Capstar. Works wonders. The owners only other option is to take the dog home and treat it themselves before bringing it back, so most are happy that I have a solution on hand. Luckily I've only used about 10 total in the last 3 years. I've always wondered if it works on ticks, too.

Yes, Keith you are correct.. I had no time to go get capstar or anything else when I got the call. I immediately knew he had a few fleas..HE was dry and in dire need of a BATH.. I keep everything else by the boat load...BUT I ws out of advantage ...I used Adams Flea shampoo and lathered with Dawn first. I had adams flea spray and after bath I did give him misting to help . I use it on ears outside to ward off the flies..or to carry to park or on trips .
Being it was late evening I had no choice..I have all my dogs flea proof...Inbetween pay days.and I had not refurnished my supplies of flea application... I use advantage on my dogs here..NO fleas unless one pops in and it is gone very fast. He was isolated for a few days and everything wiped and treated as CAUTION>. I want no contaminants on my property. GIRL SCOUT MOTTO: BE PREPARED>
I use DE in food and for preventative around the place.....and sulfur for snakes.. I do not need capstar but I know he got a pill of it..at the vet he visited. The vet even said...one thing at a time. His body is going thru a lot so lets feed him and flea him and then step forward. Vet did not know his history or why he was dry and unkept. NO alergy shots here...NOT needed. We eat and we look good in a few weeks. Rex is a full time gsd. HE is one of a kind..I preach to everyone..YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO READ DOGS>>YES, you have to start somewhere..I did..years ago..
He was wormed with panacur, IVemec for his HW, toenails cut and ears cleaned and one bath.
Sprayed with bath oil and fed.
DIET DIET DIET DIET DIET....the secret to any dogs skin and hair ..and digestion..He is A ok

HOW LONG DOES ONE CAPSTAR PILL WORK AND HOW OFTEN DO YOU GIVE IT TO YOUR DOG?

by BoCRon on 26 June 2011 - 16:06
Capstar is good for 24 hours IIRC. I try to use a preventative as opposed to treating with Capstar if at all possible.

Capstar is great. I had to use it on a yorkie once that came to us with fleas all over the poor thing and I called the vet and she suggested I give him a pill. Within a few hours there so many dead ones. It doesnt kill the eggs so I waited a couple weeks and gave another pill. Problem was solved. Havent had to use it again but it works great on an infestation.
