I've been looking into a certain breeder that I found on this forum. I've checked some of the dogs on offa.org and it looks like very few actually have OFA cert and out of those who do, there is some DM risk and degenerative joint disease.

I was under the impression that reputable breeders would have OFA cert for hips/elbows and DM for all their breeding dogs - am I wrong to expect that? Is this a red flag to move on to another breeder?

I would appreciate any thoughts/advice on this,

Veronica

You should ask the breeder not all OFA ratings are listed publicly you do have the option of not haveing the ratings posted.

Bob, are you saying that I shouldn't be concerned if a breeder has produced here and there dogs that are at risk for DM?

I am not a breeder, so there is a lot I don't know/understand about breeding, but I did have the experience of owning a wonderful GS with DM and degenerative joint disease and it broke my heart when she had to go. In the last year of her life she couldn't go up or down 2 steps and the hardest part was watching her knowing that she can't do this or that.

As lame as it may sound, I am just trying to find an honest breeder that does this for the love of GS. It just occurred to me that checking the OFA database might be a good indication of what a breeder is producing.

They may have used PennHIP instead of OFA or even went the SV route.  So, I would talk to the person and ask.  I would make judgement based on their response.

What I,m saying is if you havent talked to the breeder you can call and ask if they have the OFA cert on the animal.

Just because there not listed on the web site doesn,t mean there not given a rating. You should always ask questions and look for answers. Just because you don,t see a breeders dogs listed on OFA has no bearing on there honesty.

Along with Hip evaluations you need to look at prior breedings, lines followed, do your homework first and you will be much better off later.

Try looking for breeders who own both male and female and go see them work and move. Reading about them is fine, seeing them in person is better.Good luck on your search.

OFA cert and her dogs from Razzy have huge prey drive, fast as hell, vey intelligent, very stable and a civil side too.

OFA does not post NEGATIVE results unless you give permission.

If you see a dog with results for elbows and there is nothing about hips, you can assume that the hips did not pass.

German A stamps, which are given at 12 months, do not appear on the OFA database.

There are breeders, who import dogs from Germany with A stamps who then go ahead at 2 years and submit X-rays to OFA.

There are a growing number of breeders who test for DM, CERF and temperament.  If buyers keep asking for those things, breeders will provide.

You are obviously doing your due diligence as a responsible puppy buyer.  Good for you.
