opinions please. do you feel you should socalize a pup before all their shots are done or only after.

by SitasMom on 17 June 2011 - 04:06

if the firs set of vaccination is at 7.5 to 8 weeks, second is at 10.5 to 11 weeks, third is at 13.5 to 14 and rabies is at 16.5 to 17 weeks you have missed the most ideal times to socalize a pup.......

so what are the options?

i had a trainer today tell me i shouldent have bred my litter because my dogs have genetics for fear. my male is no way afraid of anything he has begun schutzhund training and my female is a certified sar dog.

this puppy was not socalized untill she had her rabies at 4 months she now barkes at strangers and kinda hides behind her owner when other dogs come around. none of the other puppies in the litter show thiese problems and neither did mother i raised her from a pup so i dont know where there is a problem becides the dog is not socalized. according to the puppy parent the pup is fine at home lovey and playing. the puppy barks at strangers and hackles alittle but no tail tucking or flagging just at rest. and at other dogs she barks and growls with no hackleing. im going to see this puppy tomarro to find out wth is going on. gah i wish these things are brought to my attention before there is a problem

her trainer told her not to socalize the dog untill her shots where done and then to only socalize the dog at his facility which she has to pay 50$ a session to train and then 20$ a session for socalization. he has her soo twitterpated lol im trying to convince her to bring her puppy to my schutzhund club and socalize the pup with dog people but he told her not to take the puppy anywhere XD oy.

late start........

A week after the second set of puppy vaccinations, a puppy is 80 to 90% "safe".  that's good enough for me.

they need to get out and about, even if its just to the homes of family and friends.

they also need for family and friends to come and visit at a very early age - like from 2 or 3 weeks.

yep my entire litter was sold by 1 week of age and from that point i had people comming and looking at the puppies and our people we had coming into the house we had looking at the puppies till they where alittle older then i allowed people to handle them some
once the puppy parents choose their puppy at 7 weeks they could come as often as they liked and play with their puppy so the pup was use to the people before they went home.

I've always started right away with pups.... never bred them or anything, but I got my old GSD at 6 weeks (yeah, I know, but she was an oops litter at a farm and the family were trying to get rid of the pups ASAP... only one other pup was left after I got Dallas) and started taking her places that night... mainly to my moms, the gas station dad worked at, and Petco. Our Golden we got at 8 weeks, was taken around places, and has turned into the sweetest dog you'd ever meet.

Maybe it's just a phase? I'd definantly get away from that trainer though - he's in it for the cash, completely!

By the way, how's the little silver sable guy doing? Such an interesting color.

I too am not a breeder, but my GSD companion pups went out (in arms) straight away. We would often sit in supermarket car parks with the back open, so they could see a wide variety of things. At one point (when I couldn't carry my male any more because he was too heavy I borrowed a 'puppy stroller' from the breeder and wheeled him around in that, out with my other dogs for a walk.  People thought it was so funny that he got lots and lots of attention from everyone we met.

At 11 weeks, subject to no localised diseases going round, they were taken out on lead to as many places as possible (including our local pub), and for regular short walks in the park, and signed up to a training club. They also visited the club (in arms) at around 9 weeks.

Any trainer who suggested no socialisation before 4 months needs shooting IMO. I go the over socialisation route, and never ever limit it to one place.

It's going to take a lot of work to catch up on the socialisation this pup has missed.

We ALWAYS started early, usually at about 6 weeks old in non dog traveled areas. The risk of under socializing is far greater
then the risk of parvo (in the areas that we took ours anyways). We took them to see family and friends, for rides down the
road and to our SO K9 training building. TS was also a big hit but no one here takes dogs in there. After shots we went to the
usual places.

I would never tell someone to keep their puppy in a plastic bubble untiil after a rabies shot. That was very bad advice on the
trainer's part and I would tell them to get the heck out of dodge and find another trainer.

I say to start right away;  there is socialization that can be done without risks;  do not take the the dog park(s) or for that matter any other dog place.  I do not even start vaccine program until 8 weeks;  and 4 weeks consequtively thereafter until 16 weeks; so a series of 3 shots;  hell they are half grown by 16 weeks.  Best of luck  Nan

yep it frusterates me because this perticular owner gave me a ton of greif in the beginning but we worked through it and she ended up with a very nice female one i would have kept for my self.

this perticular trainer is a retired k9 handler who trains police dogs for their detection work. im going to attempt to keep my mouth shut at this training im going to today and just observe. and im going to take mother to the building and let him tell me if she has fear issues. too bad i dont have daddy  my female i didnt know better but after her second parvo shot i took her everywhere dog park stores literaly everywhere i took her to a concert when she was 5 months i did all i could to get her socalized i had no idea what i was doing. i had breeders and trainers actuly tell me i was over socalizeing my female. well guess what i have a even tempermented girl who i can trust in any situation kids can jump on her pull her lips ears tail they can do anything and she just licks them.

personaly i have never ended up with a fear agressive dog so i dont understand how people end up with it becides neglagance. all soo frusterateing.  thank you all for your comments. i just wanted to see if i was wrong in the eyes of other people.

atleast the owner understands if she can no longer handle the puppy she will have to give her to me and shes the type who would. i feel i personaly can fix this problem eazy.
