The love of my life started whelping at 4am, I planned on taking her to the vet when they opened because she was acting funny, gums were fine, etc.. then at around 10am she got really sick, restless and her gums were very pale, I raced to the vet......she has a severe uterine infection, lots of fluid, and other stuff....this is a high class vet clinic, they gave her 2 shots of oxytocin, nada....the problem within her was so severe they couldn't do the C-Section there I had to take her to a specialist......this dog is all I have, the love of my life, I'm sure many of you feel the same way....she has less then a 50% survival rate.

Please pray for her, please... I need her.  I took her to the "high class vet" because I felt she had an infection, vet did just a physical, I wanted more done he said no need she was fine...... I am NOT happy about that at all, his stupidity may cause me to lose the love of my life.

*Update*  Thank you God...she lived.....13 puppies total, 12 lived...my first stillborn in 6 years....Thank you God....thank you, thank you.

Hey Lady you hang in there--you deserve a little break after all that.  Sorry to hear the problem but oh so glad your girl is going to be OK.  And all you guys--you, mom, vets==did good to save 12 puppers--they will all be very special. Sending prayers and good vibes your way................

She had 4 puppies before I took her in, then after they gave her the oxytocin we waited about 20 minutes then on the way to the specialty vet I decided to check her and I felt feet, took me a bit but I was able to unbreach him....I have 5 with me, the other 7 are at the vets.  I am upset about losing a stillborn because I haven't lost one in so long (I have a special recipe that I swear by, bright red, healthy placentas everytime)  My girl is 5, this is her 3rd litter...first litter she had 9, second litter 10, and I actually tried to have LESS puppies this time because she is my personal and I want to take care of her.   I am pissed at the other vets though, I felt there was something wrong, fluid inside of her uterus weeks ago, insisted on testing and the vet said there was no need....I cried like it was the end of the world, fear I'd lose her and she was suffering....I was trusting my instincts but I put my trust in the vet and he was wrong....an infection like she had doesn't develop overnight...it could have been prevented, but,,,she is safe and that is all that matters.  God sent me an angel.

It is the worst feeling in the world waiting for the word on your heart-dog when they're in crisis. I'm so glad she came through this, I'm sure she's not out of the woods yet. I'll send you my prayers & positive energy, for you, your girl & her babies. And yes, follow up with that other vet. Maybe when he hears from you, it'll save someone else from going through the same sort of pain. Maybe next time he'll trust an owner's gut. Or find another vet. Mine's not too high class, but she listens to me, she understands that I'm tuned in to my dogs, & we trust each other.
Good luck, & best wishes! jackie harris

Thank heavens both your girl and her pups came through this.  I know you feel badly about the stillborn, but under the circumstances it is unlikely that there was anything that could have been done to prevent it.  The surviving 12 babies means you'll certainly have your hands full, that's for sure! Out of curiosity, how many times did you have your bitch serviced for this litter, and if it was more than once, how many days between services?

In fairness to the first vet, it is EXTREMELY unusual for a full-term pregnancy to co-exist with such serious metritis, and if she wasn't exhibiting signs of an infection when they saw her weeks ago (fever, loss of appetite, excessive lethargy, etc.) there probably wasn't much they would have been able to identify at that point...and that close to her whelping date isn't when you'd want to go mucking about with antibiotics and such that might not be necessary.  It is quite possible that there were more than the 13 fetuses you can account for, actually, and it could be that one or more pups died in utero a few weeks back, subsequently necrotized within the uterine horns and in fact was the cause of the infection.

But the most important thing right now is that mother and pups came through, and that they continue to do well.  I take it your girl is still @ the specialist's, along with 7 of her pups?

I just picked her up and her babies, she seems very altert, focused on her pups, one is very tiny, I couldn't find goats milk, hopefully I can tomorrow so I can help her feed them, otherwise I have the commercial puppy formula.

I went to the same vet for a very long time, I went in when my girl's upper k9 broke, pulp and roots showing, I just wanted some antibiotics and pain medication he said she wasn't in any pain and there was no infection present, got into a vet 2 days later thankfully.  You just never know, takes time to find the right vet that's for sure.  Have to find the right one.  Wow my typos are bad been up for a long time.
