Janette

by Janette on 26 September 2006 - 12:09

I have a 1 1/2 year old that has a few issues. One was interdigital cysts. With research I found I was able to cure them for the moment with metronidazole. Now I have to tackle the drainage ducts that are weeping behind (above) her pads on her back legs. Anyone else have to deal with this or know of a site that may give me some answers. The Vet wanted to put her on steriods for the rest of her life. But I am not ready to do this to her since she is so young.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to reply to this.. have never heard of this before.... what is the cause?? I have seen nail bed infections but can't be much help ... I'm sure that's why there has been no reply to you.. we are stumped...

I dont know how else to discibe it. The Vet believes its all due to an autoimmune issue. Hence the steriods. I first time I found it was when I saw blood spots on the floor. Knew she wasnt in season so I grabbed her foot to see if her foot was injured. A stream of fluid came out right above the pad.It was clear to straw color.I have never seen anything like it either. At that time she also had interdigital cyst . Which I have cleared up. She also got skin issues about 4-6 days after I gave her a yearly booster shot. The other problems cyst/ drainage came shortly after she had her hips xrayed at 1 year old. This started in the winter time so we can rule out grass seeds and we have tried switching her food.

Also they are very tender when I apply pressure to them. There are bumps right above where the drainage is.

If it is the same, I recently just heard of this for the first time a few weeks ago. A puppy client of mine has an older dog, not from my breeding, an American show line actually, which is a genetic and emotional mess. After several thousand dollars, it was diagnosed as a some kind of fistula disease...much like perianal fistulas but with the pads of the feet instead. The vet said it is associated with German lines, but I certainly had never heard of it before, and the owner actually laughed knowing his dog didn't have an ounce of real German blood in him, unless, of course, you wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back. This dog owner is also a doctor, so of course thoroughly researched his options. The main course of relief is prednisone for this dog, which they aren't all that thrilled about aside from the fact that for the first time ever, the dog has an appetite. If you'd like I could put you in touch with them if you'd like to compare notes.

Kandi, They seem similar but I still want to try to avoid prednisone. This dog is full German working lines. Bitch was bred in Germany, whelped in US.She has never lost her appetite. And her stool is normal. She acts normal.Better since the interdigital cyst are almost gone. This has been diagnosed autoimmune, I believe that means she has an over active immune system. I guess from the response I got , not to many have seen this.If you friend would like to email me they can reach me at: boggiebuddah@yahoo.com Thanks,Janette

Janette, I worked as a vet tech for a long time and never heard of this condition. My GSD, Blitz, had interdigital cysts on both front feet which have healed up with antibiotics and a topical. I'm really not convinced they are the result of an autoimmune problem, but I know some believe that to be true. Please let us know how you make out. I suspect it is some sort of fistulas as Kandi suggested. Did you do an interent search to see if anyone else has had a similar problem with their dog? Good luck.

Hi Janette, I will send the owner a link to this conversation, so hopefully he will post here, so others can benefit too. Stay tuned!!!
