hello,
I am new to breeding and I have two inexperienced shepherds. My female is ready currently, Flagging, holding tail, pushing rearend into male. She allows him to mount also.
My problem is the male. He licks, smells and shows interest in the female. He will mount her but thats it. He will not make any "mating humps" and his penis doesnt come out. Should I be assisting him and if so how?
I did attempt to assist. Holding the female still and trying to direct the male in.
Its not working.
Thanks everyone!

A couple of things.... what day is she actually on? Some females are "Hoes" and will act like they are ready when they are still early. I learned early on to trust my male. But a progesterone test will tell the tale, if she really is ready. If you don't want to do one then just wait it out and see if he shows more interest as time goes on.
How old is he? If he's young then that is a bit unusual. Most young males want it whether they are ready or not. More experienced males will wait until they smell/taste that they are ready.
Lastly, I would have some health checks done to make sure there is not something physical going on with him. IE prostate infection, bladder infection, low levels in some of the blood panels, low sperm count... etc. There are also suppliments that you can put him on... Mr. Stud in one and there are many others.
Hope that helps some!

djc: My female is on day 13. Yesterday she also showed signs of being ready. Is this too soon?
Our male is 1 1/2yrs. It seems as if he is just either too young or inexperienced. He just really doesn't seem to know what to do or really be too interested in trying hard.

No, day 13 would be in the normal ballpark of 9-15. I've had females take as far in as 25 days. So a progesterone and health checks on him are what I would suggest.

1 1/2 year male is still only an adolescent. Did he have an opportunity to see an experienced male mate a female? How old is your female? If she is about the same age – she is only a teenager, too.
Nature usually takes care of itself. If you are desperate for them to mate, leave those puppies alone – they’ll figure it out eventually on their own…

Just wondering, since your male is so young, have you had his hips examined? If he is dysplastic, mounting the bitch will be painful, & thrusting may be beyond what he can do. I'd get his hips checked, too, if you haven't already. jackie harris
