Update on Max.... About 2 weeks after the vet thought it was an enlarged prostrate....

I was at my parent's home (my Dad was rapidly going downhill from cancer) for the weekend. My husband John called me Sunday night there and said he was worried about Max, that he was acting odd again. So I came home Monday afternoon and Max's lower abdomen was slightly swollen and tender again. Same symptoms as last time. Monday night Max slept curled against my legs all night and my heart just sunk.

Tuesday morning he was much worse and I could tell he was really hurting, even though he tried to hide it. I rushed him to the vet and they rushed him to the back. I could tell from the vet's face that it was not good... she said she was praying it was bloat, she could fix that... but it wasn't bloat, she suspected internal bleeding caused by some type of cancer of his spleen. She didn't think he was going to last much longer unless they did surgery. She said she may be able to remove his spleen and he may have a chance. Or I could let him go.

My heart was breaking, my husband came from work. I told him that we should at least let them open Max up and see if it was possible to save him, as long as his quality of life would be ok. And I couldn't just let him go without KNOWING what was wrong. So we spent time with Max in the back while we waited for the operating room to be free. I was able to tell him what a good boy he had always been, and I held his head in my lap, he just stared up at me with such intensity. I told him that if this was goodbye for now, for him to give me a sign some way some day, that he was ok and we would meet again.

They came and took him away... It seemed like we waited for hours and as soon as the main vet came to get us, I knew from the look on her face that it was over. She said that at first the spleen seemed to be only affected. But then they saw the liver and very small polyps (the beginnings of cancer there, too), even if they removed the spleen, Max wouldn't live very long as the liver would start to fail. As hard as it was, I made the decision for them not to wake him, but to let him go. After almost 8 years I owed Max that dignity...

He was a great dog, one of the ones that just seem to have an uncanny way of knowing what you want. He never questioned, never refused, and was always ready to go at the drop of a ball. His kids have some of that innate goodness but none to the degree Max had. He really was one of a kind and I will always be grateful he was in my life.

2 weeks later I lost my Dad... I like to think Max went first so he could help my Dad move on. I'm sure he was there with a stick and a wagging tail. Until we meet again.............
