Hey everyone, One of my dogs seems to be having some type of allergic thing going on... He is scratching at his eyes with his foreleg and causing them to be further irritated, and causes them to get gookey looking. No change in food, No change in bedding, He has a yard where there is dirt, grass, cement, and a stall with shavings. So nothing has changed and i can't figure this out. When I rub a cortisone creme around the skin around the eye it seems to help him ALOT !!! Anyone got any ideas ??? Anything would help at this point I'm at such a loss for any explanation. Thanks in advance. Mitch

Age of the dog? Demodex?

I should mention also he is 100% healthy and current on all vaccines, so I don't suspect any resp. issue, as this has been going on for about 4 weeks now. Have a trip to vet soon, will take with, But don't see a need to make special trip for this, Am I wrong about that do you think ??

not quite 3 years, Would it be so localized, It really does not look like what I have seen before, But... worth exploring this possibility.

It could be hay fever my dog gets this I give him hay fever tablets and bath his eyes with look warm water with a pinch of salt in water bath 4 times a day this does the trick for him good luck

Hi echomeadows (message from UK - not sure if you are USA - no matter), as you are saying this is very localised to one eye I would suspect NOT ALLERGY, usually allergies as in humans affect both eyes. Could possibly be a localised infection or very small injury (grass/seeds/wood or any other sharp minor injury) in one eye and sometimes this can cause an eye ulcer. We had one bitch a long time ago who had this problem and the vet put in a fluorescent dye to show up the ulcer, we could see the change with the dye. The dog could also have scratched her eye if it was itchy initially and then caused the damage itself She was given some injections and some ointments to help cure this. So long ago cannot remember the ointment (possibly steroid ointment), but did cure it very quickly. It is a very painful thing and can damage the dog's sight if this is what it is. I would get this checked out if it has been going on for so long. Hay fever or allergy would eventually pass if external. Hope this is of help. Best wishes Aileen & Jim Allsala GSDs Scotland

Hi Echo, I would definitely get him to the vet ASAP. Eye injuries, which is what this sounds like, are very painful (says the voice of experience) plus, as has been mentioned, if left untreated could cause permanent damage. Good Luck

Please be very careful putting any kind of not specific eye medication around the eye... eye itching can most definintely be caused by allergies and in most parts of the country(US), there are pollen changes occurring right now.. We can develop allergies to things we never were allergic to before, so why couldn't your dog do the same?? All of the things you mentioned are possible allergens .. Demodex can most certainly be localized but it is specific looking Your dog is showing an irritation, regardless of its cause.. you need a vet to look at the eyes and even stain them to be sure no corneal abrasions are present.. another reason for not using any cortisone.... If it bothers you enough to ask here, seems worht a trip to the vet.... Good luck

Take your dog to the vet. When my one girl did that she had a grass seed way way back there. Don't self medicate this as whatever is causing it could cause permanent eye damage. Others have just said the same thing....

Take the dog to the vet.Have the vet put it under the blue light if they have one. it sounds like an infected injury.
