I’m looking for a good (and dog friendly) method for water proofing my dumbbells. They inevitably end up getting rained on, if not in training – sometimes one gets forgotten outside. Mine (from moisture) are now cracked and pretty ugly looking. Not to mention they deteriorate much quicker when they are unprotected.
I'd like to refurbish mine, fill the cracks, sand and water proof. My only concern is that I don’t want to use something that is harmful or poisonous to the dogs for any of this. Any suggestions?

A safe method to take care of your dumbells from cracking due to use is to use butcher block oil, mineral oil or vegtable oil. Once a year would do. A friend does his every 6 months. Buys either of the oil listed above gets a gallon size zip lock bag let them soak for a few hours and lets the dumbells air dry out side.

really - I've had dumbbells for years and years (same ones) - they are in my truck in all temperatures, taken out, used, sometimes left out in the weather for days (weeks?) though I do try to put them back in the truck when I'm done - my Schh3 dumbbell lives under the scaling wall 24/7/all year round. no maintenance. sometimes I replace one because it's been chewed up so badly - but never because it rotted or cracked due to weather.
