...my experience is they get darker every year.dark at birth then light stage then darker as the spine stripe spreads..my 8 yr.old wgr female has gotten much darker in the last year and  in the last few months her tan markings have gotten a deeper red rust color...same with my czech male...

I still haven't figured out to either type between pictures or enter typing at the end of the last picture. But here is Arabella at a few weeks, then 10 wks, then 3 mos and now 6 mos.

destiny4u yes I know you she looks like a different dog from fuzzy red puppy coat to almost all black adult coat. But she still has the red under coat it's just covered up by all the black guard hairs.

Sables seem to return to the color they were with born or within the first 3 weeks of life. If they were very dark during that time normally become very dark again as adults. Same could be said if they were light colored sables in the early weeks of life. They normally will not have as wide of a dark ban going down their back or spot on their tails, then their adult coats will return as light as they were born / 1st 3 wks of life. Has anyone else noticed this?
Pictures below are the same puppy at birth, then 8 weeks old, & 4 months
