I love these things but would it wreck a show coat?

Yes

I bought one and hated it, didn't seem to do what it is supposed to, but JMO

I use the furminator on Pharaoh's legs. You would be amazed at how much fur comes up. It is the perfect tool for that purpose.
I would not use it on his torso, tail or ruff.

I made the mistake one time of using it on my DDR I use to own. It TOTALLY stripped her coat. It took months for it to grow back to how it use to be. I will NEVER use it on a German Shepherd again. On the shorter haired breeds such as labs it would work great.
I do however use it on my cat. For that purpase it works very well.

LOL. Jyl, that cat is the only animal in our house that it's used on as well.

I agree, it does break the coat.

I thought so. They are just too efficient at hair removal and they are half a clipper blade. Didnt want to take my chances and ruin a coat. Back to the greyhound and forced dryer....sigh....

Seems like people either love it or hate it.
so if you guys are against the furminator then what do you use?

I use a furminator when my dogs are blowing coat. Works good for me. Just be careful to always stroke in direction of growth. I would not use it on a healthy coat. No reason to.
A hack saw blade will work just as well on a dead coat.
