I have a 13 month old female that has her basic obedience on and off leash completed. She is very loyal, gentle, friendly, and seems to be protective and observant when needed. I do have a shutzhund club very close to me. Is this a good age to start her in shutzhund, or at least see if she has the drive?

I started my first dog at 15 months and my second I started tracking as a pup, but just started working her in bite work about 1 month ago at age 10 months.
If you are interested in the sport, I think you should go visit the club and get her evaluated.

I started my rescued mixed breed when she was about two years old. It was a lot of fun and it did wonders for our relationship, her self-confidence, and her obedience and attitude in general. Even though I will not be pursuing a full SchH title with her, I did train regularly in protection, and did get a TR1 and OB1, with the TR1 high in trial (beating out all the working lines who have been tracking since they were pups! Ha!).

Definitely get her evaluated at the club. You will find out if she is suitable for the sport or could do just bits n pieces. All depends on your goals as long as it is fun for both of you.

You should start training as soon as there on solid food, everything you do with a dog from a pup is training setting boundaries, forming behaviors, it,s all training. Forming a good working bond built on trust is key.

Schutzhund isn't some magical difficult sport to do. If you have a good dog, a good club and TD, and a committment to train.....you can participate successfully.....Give it a try. Age of starting is not going to stop you..Your early obedience may have an impact on some aspects of protection work, but it can be worked through if the dog has it in them...Good Luck.
