Hi all,

I am new to this forum, hence I apologize if this question has been asked before.
I am wondering why would a GSD receive rating "U" at Bundessieger in Germany.
  1. So, what are the usual "problems" of a GSD so that he/she receives "U" rating.
  2. Would you buy a puppy from a breeder who uses a stud that got "U" rating at Bundessieger?
  3. If you said yes to #2, in your opinion what would be the reasonable price you would pay for such a puppy?
Thank you.

"U" is the German abbreviation for "Ungenuegend" - "insufficient" in English. If a dog received that at the BSZS (Sieger Show), it usually means that the owner pulled him/her from further showing without a veterinary excuse (which would indicate "EZ" - "entschuldigt zurueckgezogen" - "excused with permission" in English). This has no bearing of the quality of the puppies but only indicates that the owner was unhappy with something and felt the need to remove the dog.  For most, it is unsportsmanlike behavior but sometimes there might be a valid reason. In any case, it is not the dog's fault.
The only other reasons for a "U" at a show would be a disqualifying fault or a failure at the gun test.

Hi Silbersee.

Thank you very much for your answer and explanation of "U" rating.
What I can conclude from your answer is that in order to really find out why the "U" was given, owner of that dog would have to be honest in his explanation of the rating (weather the dog was pulled without the vet excuse or it was disqualified due to some courage fault or some other genetic fault?). So it is a matter of trusting or not trusting dogs owner story about "U".

What about the litter sired by such a dog, do you see a problem with that? I guess that would be highly influenced by the reason for "U" rating.

IMO
You could do a bit of research. Check the sire's other puppies, how have they done? Check the sire's brothers and sisters, and the progeny of the brothers and sisters. Check the dam, her progeny and that of her brotheres and sisters. Has the dam been bred to this sire before? Do you like the overall look of the dogs? Which crosses do you like best and does this puppy you're interested in have any common ansestery with them on the mother's side? How are their hips and elbow ratings? How many have titles?

What do you want this puppy for? If your looking for a pet, it really doesn't matter as long as it's healthy and has a fine temperament. If you want it for breeding sport or show prospect, then you must do your research and find out as much as possible. There are no shortcuts.
