My dog recently was diagnosed with demodex mange. I suspected this for the last 3-4 weeks when she lost hair around her right eye brow, but I tried to treat it myself with a product called nustock (on the package gurantees treatment for demodex mange). I used the product exactly as the directions stated, but it didn't help at  all.

I finally took her to the vet and after a skin scrape, my theory was proven correct. She did have demodex mange. I was happy but upset because the vet's treatment was just a simple subcutaneous 1.5 cc injection of ivermectin. A treatment that I could have easily given myself it I knew the correct dosage. I was still confused how she recieved mange since overall she seemed healthy and receives a 0,6 cc of ivermectin each month for heartworm preventive.  The vet explained to me that the monthly  dosage for heartworm preventive was not enough to treat mange and that the stress of her recent heat cycle could have been enough to weaken her immune system for the onset of demodex mange to take place.

The vet also recommended that I bath her, administer a dip spray solution, and ivermectin once a week until the symptoms cease. and continue a reduced oral ivermectin dosage for up to 21 days after symptoms cease. During this time she of course will not recieve heartworm preventive.

Keep you updated on her progress.

My male had it when he was 4-1/2 mo, on the back of his ear about a dime size and then on his eye lid the size of a match head.  The vet did not treat it, and said that it could have been caused by vaccinations that can lower their immune system which can cause the demodex to take over.  The vet told me that it should take care of it's self and it did. It took about 6 weeks for the hair to grow back on his ear and eye and he has never had another case of it he is now 14 mo. There is no evidence of it at all.

How bad is your dogs?  I don't know that I would do the dips, it is not good for the dog or you!!!

Good Luck!
Kathy

You say that you are using Frontline to treat Demodex?

Where do you live? You must have a new forula of Frontline there.

For me I would be using * Revolution * or * Advocate *

@dogshome9, i'm in the U. S. if you look on the back of the frontline box it gives directions on how to treat mites that cause mange.

@kathy, my dogs mange didn't seem that bad, it was larger than a quarter size on the eye brow area, but I could see where she was starting to scratch the left eye as well.

demodex is generally self limiting if you did nothing it will go away on its own.

My Sheperd had a patch above her eye about 2 years ago. It was confirmed to be Demodex. He suggested it could be partly caused by food allergy. I changed her food to a fish base protein. It cleared up and has never returned. Just a thought.
