*Puts on the flame retardant suit and wades into the fire.*

Hypothetical ONLY in my case (as my female is spayed) but as an educational exercise for those who enjoy studying pedigrees.

Here is my male.  Now, let's assume for our HYPOTHETICAL discussion, he's cleared all his health checks (hips, elbows, thyroid) and has an FH.  As of right now he brings very good temperment, clear head, intense tracking drive and in my personal opinion good looks to the table.

Now, his pedigree is half West German and half Czech.

Would you look to take him back to a West German female and look to line breed on his West German blood or would you look to take him back to a Czech female?

For added sake of discussion, here is my female.

Repeat after me. "She.Is.Spayed" so not looking to breed this pair, just trying to learn something about the bloodlines here.

Would you take him back to a Czech line such as hers or would you look for different Czech lines?

I'm curious because I've read a lot about the West German line crossing back into the Czech lines and my male is obviously an example of this, so my question is, where do you go from there?  Back to West German lines or to Czech?

I hope you dont wade in to the fire - its a sensible question from you as a hypothetical situation.

My views would be this.   To breed from a male and female with all the virtues you state above, you would look to qualities that you would like to bring in to your puppies, or enhance, whether they are conformational or ability wise. I personally wouldnt be looking to the area of the dog - there are good and bad in every area, and because a dog is from East or West is not the point.  Breed to type in conformation, and clear headed attitude, and with all of the health checks in place, then I dont think one can ask more of you.   Mo.

You have a very nice female there RHLAR with a very nice pedigree...and she's got her SchH I.  Just curious, why is she spayed?

A couple of reasons RS.

1)  I didn't buy her to get into breeding and I realized as I got into the sport in this area that there was a very small market for working line dogs and I had neither the connections or clout to properly place puppies from her.

2)  While I love her.  I mean, I can not tell you how much I love this dog.  She is the total package, a fire cracker on the field and a gentle as a lamb, clear headed lass off the field who is physically sound as a bell (no allergies, good hips and elbows, good thyroid) she is not exceptional.  There are a lot of females out there, including her litter mate (Helmi Apanta rei) who is in the hands of an experienced breeder who can properly breed and place puppies.

So I spayed her.   I'll be honest, I often kick myself in the ass because there is a particular male I would have loved to mate her too but ... at the end of the day, I'm not a breeder.  I'm just a sport hobbyiest.
