My 11 mth GSD has become very dificult to manage when around other dogs of late. I find it very difficult to keep his focus at all with even the simplest commands that he was fine with 3 mths ago. I am happy to accept that my trainig may not be the best, but I wonder what others think about the benefits of neutering in these circumstances? I am committed to training and persist as consistently as possible, but I have had a number of people advise neutering. He is a pet, no plans to breed or show. Should I ride this out? I wnder about others experiences?

Just my opinion, but if you have no plans to breed him, then have him nutered.  jmo.  ecs

Neutering will do nothing to solve the issue at hand!!!!!!

I do not understand for the life of me why people insist on neutering their dogs because of behavioral issues or why someone would advise a person to do so. Neutering is not a substitute for training period and is not a cure for behavioral issues.

If I may ask- are you trying to simply train yourself or are you seeking the counsel of a professional? If you are consulting a professional then what discipline of training is there specialty?

Also another reason to consider not neutering your male until after he reaches sexual maturity is the health issues that could potentially follow from the chemical imbalances caused by early castration.
If you would like to neuter him please do so but after he has reached maturity. generally 3+ on average.

Now what type of training program have you been following? you stated he is difficult to manage. Please give an example of a scenario you are talking about in great detail of you, your dog, the opposing dog, and its handler.

Dogs in general, particularly males, go through stages of training regression at certain ages.  Some people will compare them to teenagers, they think they know everything and their parents have no clue, lol!  Keep working with your dog and trainer and you will eventually work through the issues that you are having.  Neutering is a personal preference, but will never take the place of appropriate training.
