I've got an imported showline bitch from Germany who was multiple V rated. She was described to me as a "long-stock" coat by someone who spoke German and read her pedigree/KKL paperwork and as a "plush" coat to me by the importer. I'm just curious about the "proper" coat description for her and am wondering what is considered acceptable coat at this time for reproduction. She came with pink-papers, her show cards and KKL1 for life. She'd also been titled to a SchH3. She was purchased in 2005.

I'm just asking about this out of curiosity. I understood long-stock and plush to be the same thing - which is longer than normal outer coat, but still with a second undercoat. I understood it was the absence of the undercoat that was the reason for disqualifying the true "long coat" type dog – although I also understand that this may have simply been an excuse for a political matter within the SV.

Is any of this correct or could someone set me straight? It's not a big issue, for health reasons the bitch was spayed. I'm just curious as the issues of coats came up a different conversation and I'd like to know what I'm talking about ;)

Here is a link to the female in the DB:

KKL1 for life and (a3) hips, I don't understand.....

What's not to understand? If she is surveyed, then she is breed worthy. A3 hips are still A stamped and acceptable. Theresa

I don't know if she is out of coat in the picture but her coat looks normal to me. Also, before I get thrashed, when I say breed worthy, I am referring to the SV requirements on paper. Theresa

Looks like a normal coat to me.

It look like a normal coat to me too . This coat debate is going to confuse some of us . Atleast it is getting me confused . Seems like if the Germans say she is plush she must be plush . I don't see it .

I have 3 Stock LC and a regular coated dog.  IMHO she isn't even what I would call a plush unless she was out of coat in the picture.

There is not official designation for plush coat, just something some breeders will say when the dog has a fuller fluffier coat.

The tell tale signs of a LC or Stock LC are, excessive amounts of feather on the legs, tuffs of hair on the feet and in and around the ears.  Stock LC has the under coat - LC is lacking unercoat.

She is not a long stock coat. Her hair is normal. As Val already said, she does not even look plushy.
Sitas Mom, a3 hips mean a-noch zugelassen. If you use an online translater you will find out that it means "still permissable". So, what is there not to understand?
We all have our principles and some of us would not breed with a-noch zugelassen, just like some would not breed with untitled and unsurveyed dogs. But when you check past dogs, you will find that some of the greats had that rating as well. Calvin asked about the coat and not her hip rating.

a3 is borderline isn't it?

if we are trying to improve the breed, wouldn't it be advisable to breed only dogs with good or excellent hips?

O.K., maybe I missing something here, but the bitch is KKL1 (life time rating) Sch.3 and approved for breeding by the SV, the founding club of the GSD.

I would most certainly take into account the NZ rating in choosing a stud.

However I would also consider the opinion of the SV to be of much greater value than an "INTERNET authority" who regardless of their good intentions regarding the welfare of the breed, has contributed nothing to the GSD.

JMHO,
Rik
