Thought I would share some pictures of my 2 year old female.  She's an even 70lbs and my 14 week 5 day old male.  He was 40lbs last Tuesday.  I think he might be a big dog when he is full grown.  Neither of his parents are oversize.

And just for kicks, the new girl Sanjanna "Janna".  I pick her up next Sunday.  Driving 10 hours to meet her.

Beautiful babies!
Don't know what you plan on doing with the young male, but I would definitely not let the older dog dominate him that way if I was planning on him being a working dog, sch. etc.  Look at his face in the first picture.

It was just the timing of the photo.  Within a few seconds Ariel was the one on the ground and Ace was hanging off of her.  He was leaning back to take a leap at her.

Ariel can be a b*tch but I would say neither is dominant over the other right now and Ace never backs down when Ariel takes his stuff, he just goes right back in to get it.  In fact he didn't back down from a rather large Black Bear that was in our yard the other day.  He held his own and told it to get the heck out of his yard.  I think that is pretty good for a 14 week old.  the bear left.

Ace will be my daughter's Agility Dog for starters and I would like to use him for Schutzhund it it works out,  The little girl at the bottom will be my Schutzhund dog for sure.

3.5 months puppy at 40 pounds...WOW....HUGE puppy! what do you feed him?

I know.  He is huge.  When we picked him out the breeder said "oh he's going to be a big dog", then when we went to pick him up he was significantly larger than his littermates and I grasped exactly HOW big he was going to be.  He came to me on Eukanuba, raw burger and goat's milk at 8 weeks old and he was 20lbs.  Stayed on that for the first couple weeks then switched him over to our kibble.  He is now eating Kirkland lamb and rice kibble 2 times a day (small scoop and he never finishes it all) and he gets RMBs and whole salmon/trout a few times a week too.  He is gaining on average 3-5lbs a week right now.  I will weigh him again today and see what he gained this week.

13 Years ago I had a male that grew in a similar pattern, he doubled his weight between 12 and 16 weeks then slowed down.  I knew nothing about puppy food back then and they didn't have all the fancy foods for large breed puppies, so at the 16 week visit the vet said to take him off puppy food so he wasn't growing as quickly and putting stress on his joints.  He ended up being between 97 and 105 lbs when he finished growing.  105 in the winter when we were lazy and 95-97 in the summer when we were active.  My gut feeling is telling me that this is where Ace will end up at.  Neither of his parents are oversize either.

If the dog is going to be that big, you could also run into a problem if you DON'T feed him enough protein. I think that the Kirkland's lamb and rice is really low- too low for a growing pup who is so large. Why not use a moderate level grain-free kibble? The Nature's Domain that they have at Costco is low protein for grain-free.

43.5lbs? That is really huge. The male I just sold was 32lbs at 17wks, and not small. I don't allow puppies to become heavy, so that's a thin dog, but not emaciated. His sire consistently throws 85lb males. My male who is around 100lbs skinny wasn't as big as Ace at that age. He was 15.5 at 8wks; my pups are typically 12ish at 8wks, and I have produced a couple females who are in the mid-80's. Your dog is really super big for his age. Sounds like the breeder was overfeeding. There are some lines who tend to be bigger at birth and early on, but I would be very careful w/him in terms of feeding. Some studies suggest overfeeding even in the first few weeks of age can substantially increase a dog's odds of developing HD.
