I have a friend who is feeding puppy kibble to an adult German Shepherd to "put on some weight" I think the dog is at the perfect weight for an adult working line. Any opinions, positive, or negative feedback? He ia a large male at about 90 lbs, but the last two ribs show. He is not getting any younger and his joints may not be able to handle this increase in weight very long. I
I guess I am just looking for confirmation....
BTW.... He is 4

What brand of kibble is the dog being fed? I would put the dog on a good quality adult food or a grain free kibble. From what you are describing the dog sounds to be at good weight though. How many times a day is the dog fed? Once? Twice? How much?

The thing is, what type of food is it being fed? To me his weight seems normal, and he isn't going through that stage anymore where they need to "fill out". Usually you are supposed to see one or two ribs lightly. But tell him to take him to the vet first to make sure but to me he seems fine.
Good luck, and tell him to be careful as puppy food has double the protein and could harm him badly, especially his hips.

I cannot see how a Puppy food can Change or effect a 4 year old Dogs Hips Certainly not through the Protein content, Most grain free Kibble diets automatically have a higher protein content than Grain Kibbles anyway and nothing is proven fact that protein messes up hips or joints anyway i have fed dogs on 40% protein kibble from 9 weeks old perfect Hips and elbows
However there seems to be nothing at all wrong with this dogs weight I think the fault lies in the Owners mind, Time to Clear the head a bit in think

The kibble is nutrigram puppy food (I have never heard of it)... I just don't think being over the weight he is could be good for his joints. However their vet is the one who actually recommended it!

If the Dog looks right, acts right, is not tired and lethargic has plenty of go in him and you say you can see two Ribs, coat looks good eyes look bright and Clear, then if he is all that above the dog is fine a lot of this stuff is in the heads of us Owners
