It seems that all the DDR blood line is working line. What happened to their show line. Did it collapsed like the Wall?

Good question .

DDR (East German) breeders did not produce show line dogs.  They had no use for a dog that did not serve a utilitarian purpose.  Even in the West the concept of "show line" dog did not appear until perhaps the '60s or '70s (depending on whom you speak with).

The "show line" type is a "Johnny come lately" type that defined itself in the most recent 30 years or so of the breed.  If you research the origins of the breed you will find that the breed founder, Capt. Max von Stephanix, decried the practice of breeding dogs to excel in physical beauty above all other considerations.

That being said, true DDR blood is increasingly hard to find, as that type in and of itself has not been propogated for a while now.  Furthermore, breeders claiming "100% DDR dogs" have a shrinking gene pool to deal with considering that the original stock - and its breeding premises - are no more.

Good answer thanks SchHBabe. They sure are backing them self against the wall  with the dwindling gene Poole of East German lines .It seems the west  German show lines are going that Way too  .

The show-line is not only "beauty";  it has to do with physical structure and bone ratios for tireless gaiting and working with sheep and other livestock. The tragedy is that this physical condition has overcrowded and ignored the necessary "mental condition" . Thus we have "top"  show-dogs that excel in their work-related physical characteristics but fail in elementary mental fitness.

Really Yvette?
I am not too familiar with East German lines, besides the common knowledge of bloodline 13 etc.
But I did read on the East German forum of Parchimer Land once about the so-called showlines.
Maybe somebody can clarify that? Unfortunately, Werner Dalm has passed away last year.

"Thus we have "top" show-dogs that excel in their work-related physical characteristics but fail in elementary mental fitness."

I'd like to see some of the top German showline dogs herd sheep all day! Some of them look all right, but others seem to have gone the way of the American showlines: they look like they are crippled! They may be able to trot like the wind, but at the walk, they slouch along, their butts nearly dragging the ground, looking like a strong breeze would blow them over!

Some of them even walk and trot on their hocks now, same as the American dogs:

Doesn't the standard say something about a trot that is "low to the ground"? How long would this dog last herding sheep, when it wastes effort lifting its front legs so high?

This dog is V1 Ustinov vom Niemberger Eck, BTW. The dog above is Teo Indigo Lake, the offspring of two V-rated dogs.

I am afraid this discussion will go nowhere so I rest my case with my previous post.

Sunsilver, please that is so off topic.
this thread is about East German dogs and if they had show and workinglines like in West Germany.
You have posted these photos at every opportunity you can get.
I have a few questions for you:
1) Did you ever ask the owners of these dogs and/or photos for permission to use it?
2) What is your problem with this issue? Is it because of your own dog or why?
This is so frustrating.
The photos you display were action shots snapped at a show and/or in movement. Dogs dig in when they are on a tense lead. I bet you that they do not look like that when standing natural.  I even want to say that the second dog is very nice looking and certainly not a hock walker. Let it go, please! Have you also thought about how this would hurt the feelings of the owners, since you so freely publish the names of the dogs?

I would be interested to see one of the East German show line pedigrees .  If any one can give a link or any other info  on  one  of  them  , If any exist  please share . Some one must know for sure one way or the other and it should be verifiable. Unless the wall colapsed on the records.
