Mystere

At least it IS dog-related, so I see no problem with it.  JMHO

It seems to me that this is like the Christian edicts concerning money-lending and usury... which seems to be more observed in the breach, than in the practice.

The issue regarding AI is very interesting, as it relates to some of the animals in our food supply, as well, particularly in the cattle and dairy industries.

Hamza: I would be interested in reading an update, after you speak with your Imam. Please let me know by pm, if you feel uncomfortable placing it on the site.

Thank you.

Salaam Alaikum

I too feel that this is a very interesting and revelent topic - please continue!

by freemont on 23 December 2009 - 19:12

Hamza et al,

Aren't muslims not to have any dogs because they are considered "unclean"?  I am surprised to see any muslim breeders or owners on the board at all.

Just curious.... maybe you could clear this issue up for all to see.

Thanks,

Freemont

The Koran, on the other hand talks about the sleepers in the cave (sura 18) as having a dog, inside their dwelling place and allows meat killed by hunting dogs. There is nothing in the Koran, which even remotely suggests that dogs are unclean as pets. Indeed the Koran states that God has subjected animals to be of use to humankind.

So which does one follow the actual Koran or the writing of the Prophets?

I don't find any problem with it either - This board is for information - "dog related" and this is related.  If someone has the mind to post it - then they should be allowed to do so...if you dont like it don't read it...

I too would be interested in what the outcome is when you speak to this Imam.

What if he tells you -your interpretation is wrong and he interpretion is that you shouldn't buy or sell dogs.  What then?

Happyday

If I were a memeber of a religious messageboard, I highly doubt that anything to do with canines (like breeding, feeding, training) would be a topic relavant of discussion.

Hmmm. Interesting.

I am a Muslim and it seems there are genuinely a few here that have asked some valid questions. I will attempt to answer with what knowledge I have.

A lot of the "stuff" heard by people is more to do with the customs of the countries originated than with actual religion or religious edicts.

Prophet Muhammad himself had a dog as well, a highly prized hunting Saluki dog and the genral consensus of everyone and the prophet himself is the dog has to do something valuable to earn its keep. I agree 100% with that statement and findnothing contradictory about it. If my dog is just sittign like a lug by the fireplace and spreading fleas on the carpt, what's thepoint of having it? A dog's value to us humans is assisting us and in doing tasks for us, being in a symbiotic relationship, guard house, hunt game, flock sheep, sniffbombs, sniff drugs, apprehend criminals, search and rescue, cadaver search and so on and so on.

For the person to ask who to follow Quran or Prophet's Hadith - If the 2 are found to differ, you go by Quran every single time, in other words, Quran trumps Prophet's Hadith every single time and that has been reiterated ad nauseum by the Prophet himself, often saying: If I say something that is at odds with Quran, you go by the Quran, for I am just a man myself, no different than any of you are.

Regarding "unclean". At the timeof the Prophet, they had service dogs, meaning they had guard dogs and they had hunting dogs. Reffering to "unclean" dogs is talking about the strays that were roaming, had diseases,  were in fact "unclean" or with rabbies,  were biting and pestering people stealing food etc... Prophet did say that those dogs should be killed, not the dogs that were beneficial to its human masters. They were actualy quite prized, and asI mentioned above, even the Prophet himself had a Saluki hunting dog at some point.

Also, the People of the cave had a dog with them and that was mentioned as well.No contradictions, there.

Where allthis stems from is in those parts of the world, people don't have, what we call here "pets", like having a dog forsake of having a dog. Like having a poodle and giving her manicure or pedicure, blow drying her hair, Westminster crap, or aChihuahua with  "designer sweaters"on it, with pink colored shirts saying I am mommy's girl etc... etc... I even saw a lady with a Chihuahua that has some sort of a "harness" once! Funniest thing I ever saw.

Those people there live a much harsher life than we do here and they find it hard to comprehend that if a head of a family has a hard time to provide dinner for the kids to have a dog that will just sit around,  do nothing to contribute to the well being of the family and be another mouth to feed.

More on regarding "unclean".

Say I have a plate of cereal on my table... Phone rings, I go to answer and the dog sneaks up and east it all. What now? That particular plate is now considered unclean for use for me and I have to wash it "7 times" (meaning wash it thoroughly) before being used again. If somebody gets allhung up about "washing 7 times", don't take it literally, it'sa figure of speech, same as saying "he was sailing 7 seas", not literally meaning geographically 7 seas, but rather sailing far away.

Also, one does not have to be a Muslim to consider a person sleeping in the same bed with his/her dog as not the cleanest way to spend the night that there is.

I donot have knowledge about AI semen sales or stud fees that are mentioned before, as I am not a breeder and I didn't take any time to research those topics in regards of what Islam says about that,so in short, I have no clue what's up with that

I hope this that I wrote helps to clarify.
