Rania

Hello,

I like to share some photos of Sky I took in the last few weeks. I couldn't get him to stack as he's my first GSD and I am not experienced in stacking him correctly. And whenever he stacks naturally I don't have a camera available.

Here's his pedigree

Why on earth are you using that collar on a 7 month old ?

You mean the prongs in the first photo?
I hate to use it but I have to. I have trained him for long on the "heel" command but he doesn't heal and literaly drags me whenever he sees a cat or another dog. One time I fell and eversince I decided to use the prongs whenever I am outside untill he learns to heel.
Generally, Sky is a very difficult dog to train and stick to commands. I am having very difficult times with him.

Rania,

He is adorable, Big ears, big head with a strong stud expression. He also looks happy and healthy, good luck with him and let us always hear the good news from you.

Raina,
I too had to go to a pinch on my girl earlier than most would like for the same reason.  She is a hard bitch and hard headed to boot.  The pinch helps her to self correct.  That being said, what a beautiful pup!  I love the pic of him with his eyes rolled towards the little bench...it looks like he is watching a mouse hole.  Keep working on getting the stack.  Use treats and tell him to stack.  It takes a while but he will get it, then work on telling him to stay once he is in position.  You will be so glad you accomplish that.  Enjoy him!

Hi Raina,

From what I heard, prongs are used on pups that are more than 8 months old during training.

Could you share with us your experience using the prong on a pup?

Too cute;  beautiful substance.  I also had to use a prong on my boy when  he was young, now  you put a choke on him and he goes"  your not going to pull on that are  you"??  Too funny.  But he could easily pull me out of my wheelchair onto my face ot dislocate a shoulder, etc. etc.  Nan

 Jeysalim,

I don't use prongs when training Sky. The only reason I acquired the prongs is because Sky becomes hyper when I take him on walks. He would want to chase every cat or dog he sees and sniff at everything; the leather collar and chocker do not work at all.
Sky is a very powerful puppy. He struggles with the chocker even it tightens hard around his throat. If you hear him breath when I walk him with the chocker, you'll be extremely concerned like I was. I was afraid I would damage his windpipe, so I got the prongs.

The good thing about the prongs is that Sky doesn't struggle with it at all. If he attempts to chase a cat or a dog or speed up, I pull the leash a little and he stops when the prongs pinch him.
The prongs made walking Sky more enjoyable and I can even take him on longer walks. Instead of wasting my energy on struggling with him forcing him to walk by my side and at the same pace of mine, I invest this energy in spending more time with him and even jogging together.

 DebieSue,

I guess we both are dealing with hard-headed GSDs. It's a nightmare.
Sky tests me all the time. Unfortunately he takes me being nice with him for granted. When training him, I correct him and put on that frowning face. As soon as I smile and start playing with him, he does all the wrong things: pee on the floor, bite my hand..etc

Sometimes I become very frustrated and I was thinking about selling him. But I love him and can't give up on him.
