Does the type/material of the dumbell make any difference?

I am training my GSD for obedience at present and the trainer I go to suggested I use a wooden one with square sides as there prevents it from rolling to far and also helps when the dog tries to pick it up. I also have rapped some string around the bar as this help the dog when holding.

Are you talking about schutzhund dumbbells? I got a set from http://www.dogsportgear.com/dumbbells_OB.htm around a year ago and I have no complaints.
