buckeyefan gsd

hello everyone,

i feed mostly raw,and as a puppy i am feeding 10% of his weight daily.
my question is at what age do you begin to lower this to the 4 or 5% range.
he is only 4 1/2 months so i know it is a little ways away.
thanks in advance.

Are talking about when your dog is an adult, and going to 100% RAW?.  It differs.  For example, I feed my adult male who is extremely active around 2% of his ideal body weight, split between 2 meals a day. Of course I prefer to keep my dogs on the lean side.   Some dogs are easier keepers than others, some whole bones have more meat attached and more fat attached,  dogs activity level plays a part, so the percentage isn't written in stone, you have to adjust accordingly.

thanks sue

more just wondering at what age do you lower the amount.
i was thinking i would just maintain the body mass the way i like them to look.
just wondering if as a pup did they need the higher amount for proper growth and health.

Oh I get it now,  I didn't understand your question!  Well...the rule of thumb I used with figuring how much RAW to feed puppy was 2-4% of the dogs anticipated adult weight,  which basically stays the same (or in the case of my current schutzhund dog dialed back to 2% gradually).

I don't know about the 10% rule, so I can't give you an opinion, sorry.

i don tremember the site it was on but it was a link provided here.
10%equals out pretty close to the 3% anticipated weight right now at 40 lbs,
but as he gains more i wanted to make sure
would be the right amount.
i think i will just keep an eye on his size.i like a thin adult also just want to keep him eating all he needs
as a pup.
thanks again

I'm sure glad to see the  RawDogRanch site is back up.  I think it was down for a long while.  This is the one I always used to refer people to because it's it's easy to follow and understand, and I think has excellent information.

I think they used to have  pictures of one of their GSDs wrapped up in lights like an Xmas tree.  I printed it out and put it on my fridge, it's still there.  The look on the dogs face is priceless.

I'd start pulling it back a little from your 8 - 10% when his growth starts to slow down, I guess at between 7 - 8 months.
I dont think there's an exact cut off point,  a better indicator is what you can feel going on under his coat, if he's starting to carry a little bit too much condition, adjust.down a little, it's not an exact science and you certainly won't interfere with his development if you let the pup's condition lead you.
