Benny is five month and has lost a few baby teeth and his canine teeth are in, but tonight at obedience class tonight the trainer said his baby teeth will need to be pulled out because the canine teeth did not push them out. Is this common? Has anyone ever had to have their pups baby teeth pulled?

Hi shepherdpal. This is only my opinion. My girl is 5 months and i certainly wouldn't have her teeth pulled unless there was a
medical reason. She'll still be teething for a few months yet and i give her plenty of things to chew on to strenghen her jaw, stimulate the adult teeth and to help loosen the baby teeth. Our older dog has retained one baby tooth which may have to be pulled at a later date but at the moment is giving him no problems. If you have any doubts at all I would see your vet. Hope this is helpful. J1

This happened to me as well. I waited a few days and the tooth ended up coming out on it's own. Go buy a good tug rope and play some Tug-O-War with her. This'll help pull out loose teeth too.

You can see the extra tooth in this picture. It's the one on her bottom jaw right beneath the top canine.

I have had gsd all my life 53yrs and never had a tooth pulled, try raw bones. They will come out when ready. Ob classes are not the place to learn health traits of these dogs but here is a good start.

I don't think that you'll need to get teeth pulled. My male will be 6 months at the end of Sept. and his last baby canine just fell out about a week ago. His adult canine was half way in and the baby tooth was still there right behind it. It fell out not long after I checked it. Just check periodically. I've heard with the larger breeds, teeth are really not a problem unless there has been bad breeding.

Leave it for now he's just a baby. If it's not out by the time you do pelim's then have it pulled while he's out. In 30 years I've only had one dog who retained a tooth. His are just coming in @ this age

Obedience trainers should stick to Obedience and not give Vet. advice.
I have seen many novice dog owners unecessarily freaked out at the thought that their dog has a problem, because an Obedience trainer has made unqualified comment with regard to the health of their dog.
What others have already said is correct. Your puppy's canines should fall out by themselves in due course.
Lots of chewing bones etc. will help.

Thanks for all the good advice. We have been playing his favorite game of tug the past few days and a few more baby teeth came out.
