Rania

by Rania on 11 September 2009 - 23:09

My Sky is 18 weeks old.

I walk him daily early in the morning and late at night.

For dog owners in Egypt, we face the problem of wild street dogs.
They are usually in packs and for a single dog walking with his owner it is kind of a challenge. Even some of them might be rabid; and it happened once that I and Sky were attacked by a rabid dog.
One early morning I was walking Sky when he sniffed towards a certain direction and I thought he was curious. So I let him go to where he wanted to. Suddenly, about 10 dogs came out from under the parking cars howling and barking at us.
I understood that we trespassed their "territory" but I couldn't turn my back and walk away because it is then that they follow us and will attempt to bight Sky (that little devil who saw them sleeping under parking the cars and that's why he walked in that direction).
So I tried the "Attack-Retreat" method. I was extremely amazed at Sky's courage. I said: "Come on Sky" and he ran with me towards the dogs then I loosened the leash a little to let him approach the dogs at his speed; they retreated. Then I stopped and he instantly stopped and stood next to me. Then I took a step back and he did as well and stood next to me. Then I ran and attacked and same for him. Then repeated the method a couple of times.
We were a great team. The dogs finally stood still and I managed to turn my back and walk away and they kept barking but didn't approach us till we vanished from their sight.
I was DELIGHTED with his performance at this young age. And the fact that those dogs (nor the rabid one) scare him filled me with confidence and build mutual trust between us. He knows that I will never let any of those dogs harm him.
Just wanted to share this experience with you! It's more than a joy to own such a courageous dog!
