I have a 1.5 year old intact male with great drives. Problem is he gets tired really fast. For instance if I am playing ball with him, after about the 10th throw (or less) he retrieves it  but stops about 5 feet away and just lays down. If I get it and throw it again, he still retirieves it very enthusiastically, and if I give him time, he will engage again himself after he has rested. Even with bitework he wears out really quickly. I kept thinking that as he got older his stamina would increase, but it just hasn't.  I've tried to increase his time gradually. He loves to work and loves to play, he just doesn't last long. Doesn't matter if it is hot or cold, day or night. He is completely healthy. Is this just the way he is, genetic, or what? Is there anything I can do to build his stamina? Other working line dogs I have had would go all day if I let them. This is just new to me.
He also gets distracted with OB (he has excellent ob) and detection/tracking after just a short time, but I am hoping this has to do with maturity...

Has he had his hips/elbows xrayed? Heart checked? How is his weight?

My first thought would also be health issues.

He had his elbows x-rayed when he was a little under a year as he had pano and I wanted to make sure there was nothing else going on. They were normal. I was waiting for hips until he is 2 yrs. In March he had a blood panel done and was tested for heartworm and everything was normal. What else should I get him tested for? He is thin, but not sickly thin. In my experience my males have never filled out until about 2 yrs. (?)

 what food are you feeding?

Did your vet have you see a cardiologist?
Always.

Have not seen a cardiologist no... I have switched his foods and it hasn't changed. He was on Wellness, then Kumpi and some TOTW

It does not sound like he is lazy. Sometimes male dogs like to do things on their own time. This is more of a pack issue.

Without actually seeing what is happening my guess is one of three things:
1) Sometimes a dog gets bored and just says the hell with it. If this is a possibility look for other games that will keep his mind occupied and on you.
2) He has another type of injury that could be a nagging injury, not something terribly serious, but, enough to make him say that's enough for awhile.
3) He has some type of respiratory ailment.

My questions to you are:
Has he alway done this?

When you say he is tired (lays down), is he panting?
If the dog is not panting, then he, probably, is not tired and I would look at other reasons for this.

Are you in an area that a dog is susceptible to heartworm year round?
If so, I would have him checked again. It takes months for that to show up.

I would also consider a chest x-ray to see if his lungs are clear, any heart abnormality, etc.

Best wishes to you and your dog. I hope he is okay!

What the OP described doesn't sound that unusual to me. Do you want him bouncing off the walls constantly and never relaxing? Mine will finally lie down w/a toy...it's more of a possessive thing than a tired thing.

Could it be that he's just not that into this stuff? How is he on a long walk or run? THAT would be a better indicator of a health issue, IMO.

He is crazy about his toys- will go through/on/in anything to get to it and is always asking to play. It's just that once we start, its like he wants to keep going but doesn't have the energy. Playing ball, tracking, bitework. I've done some detection with him- he has great hunt- but again, he slows way down. Long walks he'll go the whole way, but he starts out gung ho and drops back and seems tired. He doesn't quit but will take a rest if given the chance. When we get home he lays right down.  And yes he is panting when he lays down, or rather plops down. Also still holding his ball either in his mouth or between his front paws. I don't want him bouncing off the walls, but he is no where near this. It's not a finally laying down, it happens fast. Yesterday it was within about 5 min of starting.  He has always been kind of slow, energetic but doesn't keep up with the other dogs so well. He's fast when he really pushes. We've always called him the big lug of the fam though.  I am taking him to the vet again this week. Thanks
