I have a litter of black & tan and sable puppies.  This is the first time I have had sables... One pup in particular has very light coloring with black mask and a dark stipe down his back.  I am wondering how much sables change their coloring.  I'm wondering if he is going to end up looking like a Malanois in color... or if he may darken up.  Just curious.  The other sables are dark.  I know the black and tan pups are dark now and their color will "pull back"... so is that what will happen with the sable?  It will get even lighter?  (Hes the one sitting up).

The puppy will darken, the stripe will broaden, he will go through a couple of changes .but he will darken. Good luck.

With black and tans, they generally always lighten up.  However, sables go through several changes going from dark (at birth) to light and back to dark.

Don't worry, they will darken. My Penny was really light colored as a puppy (not much black at all).
Here is a photo of her at 8 weeks with her sable father:

And this is her at 4 months:

And here she is at about 10 or 11 months (she currently lives in Germany and I have not seen her for about a year):

She is only one and a half years old and my guess is that she will change a lot more before getting her final color.

THANK YOU SILBERSEE.... THAT IS JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!  I was glad to see a pup change/mature in coloring.  Fantastic.  Thank you again!

First, the stripe might go away for a couple of weeks, eaving you with a beige puppy with a diamond at the base of the tail and a black tip, dark muzzle. Take pix because they never look like that again. ;-) Then, till about age 2-3 sables will continue to darken with each coat change. Every day when you wake up and look at your puppy you are liable to wonder if he/she is the same dog you put to bed the night before. Ha ha ha.

Yep, the stripe broadens over the sides and there is often a ring on the tail that spreads. Take lots of pics, as the sables change so much that when you look back at photos, you can't even recognize the dog anymore.

Silbersee, what is the breeding of your puppy?  she is a nice female.

Thank you, Paul. Penny is our outcross with alternative bloodlines, linebreeding on Ork Wertheraner Land is a bit unusual as well. Plus, both of her parents are showline sables. But the consensus in Germany is that she goes more after her father's Arlett line (less black than the Timo-line). This is her pedigree: www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/537160.html

Thank you Chris for your prompt reply.

I agree with you, she does favour the Arlett line, but i can also  see  Timo, she has a look of Pola Haus Dexel.

Regards Paul.
