I would still say the dogs from that era and the working lines today are closer to the original standard than the S/L dogs are.

I want to share this with you:

In my country as many already know we don't have dog clubs where we can train like in Europe and U.S, we do not have professional trainers either. People here train or better I should say teach their dogs to protect (watch) property, live stock etc and very few know pure breeds, most use native mix of stray dogs.
I have this dog (Erri od roubenky) from Jinopo in Czech, he is less than one year old, of course not trained whatsoever except come, sit and down by me.

Today I was at my farm and an old man came to the gate and told me he likes my wolf-like dog and thinks he is good. I told him he is okay but still young, he asked me is he aggressive and I replied not a bit. He said no you are mistaken, do you want to find out, I said yes, he told me tie him near that tree, put your daughter (actually she is daughter of my sister) next to him and just talk to him nicely and tell him to protect her and point with your finger towards the girl then leave the site with your family and hide. I did exactly like he asked and we all vanished from the site, after few minutes Erri was barking fiercely and snarling like a beast at the man I came running and the old man who was 2 meters away from them said this is a good dog as I told you.
So today's work GSd is not less than the old ones if not better.

Adam: I can see that defensiveness makes for selective reading and interpretation. The conformation of the WL's is less distant from the original than the SL's. Yet, WL's seem headed down the same rabbit-hole by breeding for a few overly pronounced traits. Yet, you try to create an argument and then require your chosen adversary (me) to prove your argument wrong. One SL that easily comes to mind, and used to live down the road in Pittsburgh, KS. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/119534.html But since you are refering to my suggestion of breeding a SL female to a WL male, this female could fit the bill: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/479883.html She's not the reigning breed siegerin, but has excellent conformation, drives and temperament, and more importantly, I'm acquainted with her. As for a WL to breed to her, something along the lines of an Ufo Burenswald should do very nicely?

Ibrahim,

That's a good story.  I should have been clear that I was addressing physical apperance only. I doubt you would find many S/L dogs with that type of character.

We had a young male returned to us for "protecting" a family member from a perceived danger....
14mo male lived with family since 6mos old...daughter decided to bring new boyfriend home unannounced.
Girl ran into home screaming as young man ran after her grabbing her & play fighting. Young dog immediately attacked the young man, biting him a couple of times.
The owner (retired police officer) loved the dog, but feels perhaps while his "growing children" are still living & coming home as they will with all types of friends, perhaps he should wait on getting another GSD....since his Golden was already 13yrs old, and has no aggression to any and all strangers. He too was actually happy and sad at the same time.
Happy that the dog reacted to the situation....sad because his daughter mentioned moving to a dorm.
Personally....I am glad to have the young male home again....he is now 2 yrs old...and a very good, handsome SL dog.
I believe that the young dog acted appropriate for the circumstance. He did not know the stranger, the girl was screaming, and the stranger was being physical....this dog did not hesitate, he just reacted.

A good dog, he did what he was supposed to do. I believe if show breeders (like Robin) pay due attention to working ability and work breeders pay due attention to structure our breed will become better. If show breeders introduce work bred GSDs of good acceptable structure into their programs in an intelligent frequency we can bring back most of lost traits in work as well as in show or even produce a better GSD in work, conformation & beauty.

That is a good dog...

I chose to address you because of your statements. I looked at your examples Laika are you kidding me? What are her titles good citizen and tracking? Just looked TDI up therapy work come on man. Truimph is more in line, however many W/L studs have similar structure.

You stated color wasn't a factor.

Again I will ask what balance does the cross make if a proven worker from working lines with the similar structure can be found?

I'm not being defensive just calling BS.

Ibrahim. many people do not realize that their dog is protective because they never gave him a chance to be that way.
About the SL/WL I agree with you but generally it is a wishful thinking. Most breeders of SL do not care of WL and vice versa. That attitude will keep these liners separate. Well educated and seasoned breeders sometimes "borrow" a dog from the "other" line for their breeding. Often with good success. I have written about it elsewhere.  Such dog was for example Vilo Arminius. If you are a beginner it is best to stay within working line and promote proper structure within the line. But I am not against crossing from SL to WL  and vice versa if done properly.

Prager,

In most cases what was the reason for the cross?
