Great thanks for the replies. I'd heard that several times but never from a reliable source!

Look for Fish-zole.  It is in tablet form.

I have just used this for a puppy who had amebas (not Giardia apparently) in a form called Bactrim made for children, combined with a sulfa antibiotic. It is in liquid form easy to give with a syringe and it worked really quickly and well. There is another one called Bactrim Forte for adults (and older dogs).

Metronidazole is an anti-biotic used for all sorts of intestinal issues.  I use the fish stuff regularly...

they are both sulfa drugs, trimethoprim is often used to treat bacterial infections of the gut also.

News Flash on Giardia - there is an extremely high false negative for Giardia from your basic fecal float.  An ELISA or an Antigen test  (don't ask me details about those tests-I just pay the bill) is needed for an accurate diagnosis.

A good friend of mine had a dog who tested negative for Giardia for four years and was diagnosed as IBO or SIBO or something like that, requiring repeated rounds of Flagyl and  Science Diet ID, was cured by treatment with Panacur C for 5 days and repeated in 10 days.  The happy dog has been cured for three years now.

I had a dog born in 1997 and took her to numerous vets for two years, numerous fecal floats and finally demanded an antigen test.  It was positive for Giardia.  Went through several courses of Flagyl and got only temporary relief.  Permanent cure was achieved by treating with Panacur paste from the local feed store.  She died last year with a cast iron stomach.

Now it is so easy with Panacur C.  I keep a good supply just in case.
