I have heard many people say that Fish Metranidazole is ok to give dogs instead of paying the higher cost of the vet's prescription. Is this true? Seems risky to me...

same exact meds, same dosage - can buy without perscription packaged for fish.

Ditto. Frankly, I have even used optic anti-biotic packaged for dogs that was the same exact stuff, same manufacturer, and a tenth the price.

Giardia

I don't use it for giardia but keep it on hand for general poop issues.  I typically do a fecal float test first to rule out an actual parasite.  Each time I've used it, it has helped almost instantly.  For example my 9 month old had some diarrhea for a few days and I gave him a round.  It stops the diarrhea, makes him more comfortable (not squating around the yard for several minutes or having messy accidents in the house), removes the risk of dehydration from the diarrhea.  I understand it's sort of a combination of things that treat the digestive tract.

??? An optic antibiotic with metronidazole in it? What was the brand name? Did you need a script from the vet for it?

BTW, I'd say about 90% of the drugs used on animals are also used for humans. I've frequently been given metronidazole for diarrhea (and have been known to take the stuff prescribe for my dog, when I was unable to get to a doctor...)

Yes, I know, BAD NURSE!! BAD PATIENT!!
