I am finishing my first bag of Orijen and the dogs are doing well but yesterday I met a lady with her GSD and we talked about kibbles and she told me Orijen was too rich for GSD's kidney (too rich in protein), that I should switch for Royal Canin.

Just want to know what you think about it.  I don't want to ask my Vet because she sells Royal Canin only.

I nearly lost a dog due to the beet pulp in Royal Canin, I wouldn't ever feed it to one of my dogs again. We're back to Orijen, I've never had problems while feeding Orijen, I mix it with a little Canidae, another excellent food, to lower the protien a tad. But honestly, even when I fed strictly Orijen, my dogs had no issues. jackie harris

I'm not a vet nor a nutritional expert but unless your dog already has a kidney condition or you know that sire, dam and or littermates have kidney problems and there is an explainable above average concern for kidney health I would not change foods.  If you'd like you can have your vet run a blood panel to see if your dogs levels are normal just to be extra sure....  I spend so much money on dog food, vet bills and other dog stuff I might have to list one of my kidney's for sale in the classified section.... LOL (I'm kidding....)

I feed one cup of Orijen and one cup of Nature's Domain but I also feed cooked chicken boneless or uncooked boned chicken for protien.
I used to feed just Orijen and my puppies used to grow so huge so I had to mix with Costco puppy food with it to bring their weight down.
So, IMO if you want to feed just Orijen, please feed only 2 cups a day max with lots of water. Orijen is the costliest food highly rated in the kibble market but I dont know of anyone who have used  long time like more than 6 years.

Grain Free Kibbles are only a hipe IMO because they too use fillers like potato. And in the wild I think no dog or wolf eats a potato. I have a friend whose dog is 15 years old Lab and healthy with no issues. And I asked him what they feed him and its just pedigree dog food. $23.00 per bag. Orijen is $75 for 15kg bag.

Much better is cooked or raw meat. 1 - 11/2 lbs a day.

Thanks

Kalibeck....may I ask what damage beet pulp caused your dog to almost die?  Reason I'm asking is beet pulp is also in my dogs food.

Thanks!

Our nearly 8 year old male has been on Orijen all his life. We run a blood panel annually as part of his regular health check and all values are always right in the middle. We think Orijen is a great food.
