We have a 3 1/2 old dark sable working line male whose muzzle recently started to prematurely turn gray. He has just been switched to a BARF diet and looks super other than his graying. Good muscle, excellent health… He is supplemented with Garlic, Salmon Oil, and Springtime’s Longevity supplement. Has anyone had any luck reversing or slowing this down with diet or supplements? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

<<> If you had that for humans then you'd make a fortune LOL. Good question, I'd like to see others response on this one. I don't think diet will cause premature greying??? How is the rest of his coat.

Over the 24 plus years I have GSDs I have had just a few dogs and bitches who went quite grey round the muzzle. One dog in particular, who was 3 years old, was a showline dog who only knew kennels and who had never been socialised at all when we purchased him, already had a thumb print of grey under his lower jaw at that age, by the time he was 6 years old his muzzle was quite grey, it did not affect his show career. There were many explanation given for his grey face one of which was STRESS!!! - I have never believed this story. He gradually had grey hairs on the top of his head and neck, just like a human getting old and grey. I had another 11 year old bitch who never had a grey hair in her life. I now have a 6 year old bitch, who was black and rich red (she looked like she had doberman colours as a baby) and now she had the beginnings of a grey muzzle and she had grey/silvery hairs on the back of her head and neck. I do not think there is anything that can stop this happening, it is just ageing. Personally, I have never heard of a show dog being penalised for having a grey muzzle and quite a few have won high honours at plus 7 years of age here in the UK.

My dog is 8 years old and has no grey on his muzzle - his mother had some grey on her chin, and only a few more on her upper lips when she was 12. I've seen 4 year old Golden Retrievers whose entire face was white. I think it is a genetic thing, nothing to do with nutrition or lifestyle at all. molly
