My Pup will be 19 weeks old next week....I noticed she started licking her private parts more so in the past 24 hours. Her temperament has changed also. She’s not listening and not being her normal self...Her private area seems to be larger than normal...Is it possible for her to be starting her heat cycle at this age? Thanks

I would take her to the vet Chance are no she's not in heat. She may have puppy vagintis or a bladder infection. Linda

Jonah, take a q tip (Cotton swap) and gently put it on the outter part of her private area... if you're seeing light red (or pink).. then shes going into heat. Since you're new at this.. do not be alarm and do not panic if her private area swells up. When females go into heat this is what the area would look like: ~Theses pictures (When zambi was in heat) maybe graphical for some viewers~ (Big Picture) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v403/Spiritwolfz/Zambi/ZambiNJakeMarch23rd005.jpg (Small picture) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v403/Spiritwolfz/Zambi/ZambiNJakeMarch23rd004.jpg (Big Picture) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v403/Spiritwolfz/Zambi/ZambiNJakeMarch23rd002.jpg Shes probably going to want to squat alot more.. so take her out ALOT under 100% supervision at all time. Don't discourage her from licking her swollen area. If your against putting your female inside the crate.. (Do not treat her any different!) Go to the pet store and get the heat panties (it's easy to trap in, however your female might not like the idea)and go to the grocery store to get tampads (alot cheaper!)

It may depend on the bloodline, I suppose, maybe it is possible for her to be in heat, but five months is a bit early for the first heat cycle, from my experience. The advice of Igslady is sound, indeed. I would jump on THAT advice. Stephen

I HAVE RAISED AND TRAINED GERMAN SHEPHERDS FOR 17 YEARS, AND NEVER HEARD OF A PUPPY THAT AGE HAVING A SEASON THAT YOUNG. SHE MORE THAN LIKELY HAS A PROBLEM. IT'S A SIMPLE SOLUTION TAKE HER TO YOUR VET AND GET HER CHECKED OUT. I WILL ALMOST GUAR. YOU SHE ISNT IN SEASON.

I had a Malamute bitch that had her first heat at just under 5 months of age.
