Dawn G. Bonome

by Dawn G. Bonome on 11 June 2006 - 12:06

I have had six friends who have lost their beloved dogs to this horrid cancer. None of the dogs were related, some German bloodlines, some American bloodlines. I live in the United States. To the people in Europe and elsewhere, are you seeing alot more dogs dying at a younger age? Do you think that it could be due to the vaccinations, food? All the the above? Hereditary? Any opinions out there? Dawn Bonome

I lost a mixed breed dog to it that appeared to have no GSD in her, as it's frequently found in the breed. "Guilt by association". I had a friend lose a GSD, around same age of 7-9 years old, of it a month after mine. She showed no symptoms before she collapsed. But instead of the spleen, which I think is most common in GSDs, hers was mainly in her heart and lungs. Collapsed in the backyard playing with my pup. My vet calls it the silent killer. CH

Perhaps this is because I grew up in a culture where kibble just did not exist at all, and all the dog owners were feeding raw/natural. The thing is, I only knew of one case of cancer in dogs during all those years among "dog fanciers", but I personally met three dogs with cancer within just one month of moving to the US. So I'm a believer. Even the best kibble is so overprocessed, powdered and dried out, that I do not see how it can be a healthy choice for a puppy/dog. Plus all the hormones and antibiotics in meat... plus all the flea preventatives, yearly vaccinations... there was nothing like this where I came from. Yuliya.
