Hello immyjay, It is true that not enough of the showlines are bred to do that sort of work anymore (at least they aren't tested properly). However, you can't expect 2 dogs that you haven't worked and tested in real scenarios to come to your rescue and protect you. I would take them to a good club/trainer and have them evaluated. If they've done Schutzhund work before, they may just need to be worked defensively and trained to do personal protection. Some showlines can do this. For example, my dog is a 3 yr old showline male who we have trained for sport in French Ring, but to keep us all from getting too bored (and for protection) we have done defensive work without any sleeve or suit - only the man, then graduated to working on a hidden sleeve (yes, he will bite for real and will bite VERY hard on the hidden sleeve - we have to be careful he doesn't get a dirty bite when doing this work), and then to working with a muzzle. He is from a showline kennel that has a good reputation for also producing dogs that can do the work, though. My advice, get these dogs evaluated and if you really need it and they can do the work, start to work them defensively for personal protection. If you need protection NOW, go get a dog trained and selected for that work. best of luck, Alan...

I agree with Dawn. GSD's don't waste their energy when it is not necessary. They shouldn't. If they sense danger, aggression or malevolence in another towards their owner, they will protect. An unprovoked [no malice in the stranger] attack will get you a law suit and rightly so. When the chips are down and you need protection, these dogs will protect you.
