I bought two GSD's not to long ago and I am so dissappointed in the GSD's anymore. Used to be if a person wanted a watch dog, they would buy a GSD. Now, most poodles would make better watch dogs, just not as large when people see them. All I hear is socialize your pets. I agree 100% that you don't want a dog this size to be vicious but come on now, when a stranger comes to your home and the dogs follow them around licking the skin about off them. These dogs are so timid, that I can't even yell at my neighbor across the way without the dogs running up to the porch and waiting to go back in. It has gotten to the place where all folks talk about is Shutzhund/bite work, well, that last I heard, most folks that break into homes don't wear those bite sleeves. The only thing that these two even bark at are if they see a cat or a groundhog outside when they are looking out the sliding glass doors. Just a few minutes ago, I had them outside and when I came in, a miller came in the door and I swatted at it with my hand and the male dog peed on the floor and the female ran to another room. Thought I was going to hit them and I've never hit them. I talk to them like goo goo to a baby so they aren't afraid. If I talk in a regular voice they are timid. I've owned GSD's before that if I handed someone else the lead they would guard that person as well as me and I they didn't have to wait for months for this to happen. I sure wouldn't want to depend on these dogs to protect me from anyone. All the older GSD's had this naturally. Don't know what is going to become of them in the future.

What bloodlines are your dogs? Did you get them from a reputable breeder? Poor temperment is a commen problem, especially in American bred dogs, that is why it is vital to choose your breeder carefully. Have you had them both since they were pups? Are they littermates? They could also be feeding off of each others insecuraty...

VBK0 No they are not littermates. The male is over 2yrs. SG rated and the female is over 1yr. Imported male, female out of imported parents all V VA parents. Just seems so strange. They love me to death but they love everyone else also. I even have delivery people come into my home and leave stuff on my table and pick up check and go back out without me even knowing they were here. The dogs do nothing. Even when first time meetings. I got them for breeding but don't know for sure what to do now. Lots of money in them.

VBK9 Was reading about the growling puppy, I would thank my God to hear a growl out of my dogs. lol

Your dogs are out of "VA" parents, meaning showline (Hochzucht) dogs. Sadly, when Dr. Raiser "discovered" how to make dogs "sleeve happy", the German Shepherd breed split in to 2 separate breeds. You have the showline dogs and yes, poodles do work and bite better than most of these types of GSDs do. Then you have the "working dogs" (Leistungshunde), they differ from the showline dogs not only by their color (these dogs are definitely never orange and black!), more important, they differ by their temperament. German Police (etc) do not use showline dogs, they use working dogs and there is a reason therefore. Money makes the world go round and money is made in the showring (so are GSD politics), yet as long as there are a few idealists left, who try to continue to breed the GSD von Stephanitz dreamed of, the typical working type GSD will survive. Even von Stephanitz was against show folks in the beginning, read his book! If you want watch dogs, buy a working dog and not a showdog whose was merely bred to run in circles like an idiot!

I second that Gebrauchshund! I own two show lines which would NEVER protect me.

I have noticed this also. I honestly think that a lab or golden retriever has been used somewhere along the line in these dogs. Im not joking about it either. They are not the Shepherds I knew of long ago. They have become Labs or Godies in Shepherd clothing

I really hate it when people knock German Showlines that can and do work. They are out there. I for one would not want a dog that would threaten for no reason. That kind of dog would be a liability and dangerous! You call your dog a panzie, you never know when the time comes, and I would never doubt my dog because they know the difference if a person is out to do you harm. God help that person! If you hate the SHOW LINES why did you buy the dog? AND If you are worried about your precious money, tell the breeder, get your money back and buy a dog that attacks for no reason, and have a nice Law Suit on your hands! Have a good day! Dawn Bonome

You know, Considering the money you spend on those dogs it surprises me that you didn't take the time to research before the purchase. I agree that it would be nice if all GSD have the mental strength to guard the home and person but at some point 'you' have to be accountable for your actions and decisions. If you went to the hardwear store to buy a drill, you would check them all out and pick the one most appropriate for you; if you buy any tool, any vehical, appliance you would probably take the time to research exactly what you want. "I got them for breeding but don't know for sure what to do now. Lots of money in them." I can't beleive this statement. Don't breed animals because that is what you've got at home. Picture breeding dogs with a major temperment flaw as breeding two dogs that only have half a face, or 2 legs. A flaw is a flaw, be it physically of psychologically. There are dogs out there that will fit your needs, you have to put the effort in to find them.

by Blitzen on 08 June 2006 - 12:06

Blitz is one of those whimpy showlines and I'd like to see anyone on this board walk into my house and get past him if I weren't there. My first GSD was half working, half Am lines and he'd have allowed anyone to come inside. However, much to my surprise, he did try to bring down an intruder carrying a knife. I'd rather have a dog with his temperament than one with Blitz's. Maybe it's the individual dog as much as it is the lines?
