I would like to know if anyone can recommend a good working line German Shepherd breeder either here or in Germany.  I am looking to do Sch and personal protection with her (I'm looking for a female) and possibly PSA.  I'm looking for a real girl with rock hard nerves that will excel in all aspects and not just sport.  She will also be used as a foundation girl for my kennel.  Either a puppy, an older girl that has her titles, or an older puppy that has that potential.

For those that are reading this and have a girl that would be a good fit for me, I would like to see her pedigree, pictures and prices and then we can talk further about temperment and her ability.  If you have an older female (by older I mean 2 years and older), I would also like to see hip and elbow x-rays.  I'm partial to bi-colors, but color is the last thing on my priority list.  Superb and predictable temperament, health, structurally correct, with solid nerve, and pedigrees being on the top of the list.  Thank you.

what are you looking for in the pedigree?

by Shepherd Lover on 27 November 2010 - 06:11

I'm looking at pedigrees for a whole array of different reasons.  Knowing the history of the German Shepherds pedigree gives me an excellent idea of what I might expect from the dog such as health, temperment, drives, proven stable parents and grandparents.

sure, someone"CAN"recommend a good breeder, either here or abroad..but what's "good" to one person, may be junk in someone elses opinion....i've seen a few dogs(schutzhund prospects) come in from overseas, some good, some not so good.you've pinpointed the "TYPE" you're intrested in....i would suggest that you visit regional clubs and trials in your area..speak to knowledgeable people who have trialed dogs to beyond novice levels, they can give you the "ins and outs" of good dogs and breeders, you will also meet the "sideliners" at clubs and trials(those who may have never trialed a dog)...while some may have useful info and be well meaning and informed..you should always make it a point to speak with someone who has "put it on the field".pedigree research is important, but in the end it's "the dog before you" that will transport you from"admirer to competitor".we all would like(and require) a well bred dog...but in my opinion, the pedigree doesn't make the dog,the dog makes the pedigree.........good luck.

I completely agree with you about the dog making the pedigree.  However, if you have someones "pets" being bred (and I know a lot of "breeders" do this) then who knows what you're getting.  The likelyhood of getting a good dog comes with the same territory of a good pedigree.

I have gone out to the trainers fields many times in my area to watch them work their dogs and I will not go to any schutzhund clubs anymore.  They are too political and far too competitive (the ones in my area anyway) in my opinion.  By being too competitive, I mean that they are not willing to help someone with their dogs training/issues because they want their own dogs to surpass the other person and I have seen this first hand.  Not someone I would want to recommend a breeder to me!   They are huddled around in groups like a bunch of highschool girls in "clicks" because they think their dogs are better than the other "clicks" dogs.

It's getting harder and harder to find a good breeder recommended by someone because nobody wants to throw out any kennel names.  I would just like a few names that someone had experience with that I can contact and take it from there to see if they have a dog that fits what I'm looking for.  When you say "what's "good" to one person, may be junk in someone elses opinion" is very true, but it works the opposite way also meaning that I may think that they are good as well!

schutzhund sport(or any dog sport venue) without politics or drama?......let me know where that planet is. if you allow that to limit you,it'll be hard to get a title on a dog, surely you could do the o/b and tracking on your own,but if you get the bitework done alone, then you're good(real good)leave the "clicks" and "pedigree freaks" on the side line and train your dog.once your dog is trained(to a level that you desire),then you can realize the value of the pedigree.......search your area, find a breeder that understands your position and desires, get your dog and start training...good luck.

Well look at the PSA results, look up results from nice females, ask the trainers and then maybe talk to people who have the puppies.

My suggestion.

I know of maybe two breeders I would consider taking a puppy from. If you look for import only from Germany I can't help you as I don't know anybody there I can trust. In Czech, there is a breeding I find interesting.

Happy research.

PS i know of a lady who kept couple best females back.. I met them at the age of 8 weeks and they were nice dogs, very uniformed, not crazy but plenty of drive ( I cant stand the hyper nutcases).

You can look her up the females are 5 months now but I know she started them in all venues as she cant make up her mine of which one to keep..LOL  they both had good hunting drive,  and I dont test it with a toy.. to me that is nor very good test. I have a female out of the same bloodline and I am doing it all with her PSA, Schutz and pretty much anything!

Good luck and my advice to you, if you find the right dog for you (assuming you are from US) in the US buy it locally because that makes a less chance of Fraud case or getting a dog not totally to your expectations. That does not mean you don't get good dogs from abroad, I only say it will be safer. I got all my dogs from abroad and from very good breeders but possibility of something going wrong is higher.
