Scarlet Akai

What's your idealistic perfect german shepherd?

For me

PERSONALITY / TEMPERAMENT & DRIVES

---- Supremely confident
---- Smart
---- Obedient
---- Has a happy personality
---- Sweet and loving with it's pack
---- Patient with kids
---- Easily Relaxes in the house (but lets loose outside)
---- Has a good herding instinct
---- A Good nose for tracking
---- Protective without being edgy or showing unwarranted aggression
---- Courageous

STRUCTURE

---- Little slant to straight back (overangulation in any line)
---- Nice well proportioned head
---- Would rather a dog be a bit big than too small
---- Lean muscular frame
---- Intelligent expression with deep eyes

Color is no big deal to me, but I do like blanket saddles. As for coat length.... I usually like the standard coat, but some plush and long coats are really lovely so I wouldn't mind any of them on the right dog :)

Wow!! You summed it right up! I agree with all of the above.

In my case, it is the dog I own at that moment.  If I did my job in selection and I followed up in nurturing and training, then that dog will be "perfect" for me.  Maybe not for someone else.

On structure, I prefer mine to be straight backed and I'm ok with slightly smaller than bigger (easier on the hips) as long as it is of correct build & proportions with susbstantial bone structure.

For breeders, this is probably a constant improvement project.  Or a death march, depending on how you view it.

MINE. :)

Haha. Well, not always. But here's what I love to see in a dog:

Personality/Temperament:
- Stability, impossible to unnerve or scare.
- Friendly and loving with his family, though aloof towards strangers.
- Prey drive! Love lots of prey drive. A dog that will chase the ball for hours, speed after a tug like there's fire at his  heels.
- Civil/Aggression drive. IMO nothing is more impressive than a stable, powerful dog with a nasty edge that comes out in his protection.
- Pack/Handler drive. A dog that works, happily, with his owner can do anything he puts his mind to.
- Intelligence. All those drives are useless without a brain to work through them.

Structure:
- Expression, when you can see a dog's heart in his eyes. When you can feel the courage, and desire to please his handler just from the brightness of his eyes. It's beautiful. Haha. :)
- I generally enjoy a more nimbly built shepherd, with female's being smaller and more lightly built.
Not much of a preference otherwise.. I don't rule out structure completely, but I like to judge a dog more from it's heart than it's body.

In a nutshell... from the videos of him working he's quick hard hitting, yet  calm and collected like there's a brain behind the bite.  I've yet to see a dog I like better... ("V"Olek Von Maineche,SchH III... working likes, but TOP conformation as well).  And from what I've seen he also has a lots of promise as a sire.

Right when I saw the title of this post, immediately I thought "There is no such thing as a perfect dog."

Scarlet, your list is pretty good!  I like confident, solid dogs who don't have fear issues, not "high strung", very affectionate and friendly and stable enough to turn your back and trust them with a child.  High prey drive enough to use tug as a reward, but also a civil side.  Good conformation and structure, intelligent eyes that are not set too close together, no donkey ears, I like my ears proportional to the head and not set too far apart, rich dark pigment, I could go on with looks but it depends.  Another one is being good with other dogs, I think it's underappreciated, but isn't it so nice to have a dog you don't have to worry about.

i couldent care less if the gsd was bright pink with purple spots aslong as he/she can do the job i give them so for me a perfect gsd is a dog that can work and work well JMO

For me, it would be one who can vacuum, at least during shedding season!
