Just wondering what most breeders do as far as naming litters! Do you name every pup in the litter and give them the kennel name or only name pups that you are keeping? If you know a litter is mostly pet quality and there are some faults then do you still give every pup the kennel name?

While this is the standard in Europe, and kennel names are a source of pride there, unfortunately in the US, there are many breeders who do not follow the SV criteria for breeding or the protocals for kennel and litter naming. When selling pups to pet homes, unknowningly, buyers violate these protocals and pick a name for a puppy using the pedigree ~ thus I have seen "von haus Antverpa" "Tiekerhook" "Koketal" and many many other well known European kennel names on domestically whelped litters. Recently, I saw a mother [born 2/04] and daughter [born 11/04] - both currently bred to a well known male - and one carries von haus Antverpas kennel name very incorrectly!! There are many other examples of this if you start looking at sites, pedigrees, the OFA Database etc. I don't know how many of these show up in show lines - but I am sure it happens there too. Most US breeders who follow the SV criteria for breeding use their own kennel name and letter sequence for registration with contracts specifying such exemption from AKC normal policy.

While I don't personally name all the puppies, the puppy buyers are required to use the litter ID letter for the registered name followed by my kennel name. They can still call the pup whatever they want, the registered name just has to follow that protocal :)

Same here.. although we have had a couple requests from some people to use their kennel name as well and we have had no problem with that either.... as long as they are in a good loving working home, that is most important to us....

Though it is an added expense, I register the entire litter to my self using the litter letter designations, nameing all puppies and my kennel name. Then when I sell them I do transfer of ownership.

I don't know why the AKC is so touchy, but the statement is made on a puppy registration form that the buyer has the right to name the puppy. I don't agree with this policy, but that is the way that it is. I always let people know up front that I have already chosen the puppies' names, but they can use whatever call name they wish. No, I legally cannot do that as far as the AKC is concerned, but it is clearly stated in my purchase agreement. The only time that I will allow a change is if the buyer wants to pick a name from a list of names that I keep, and in all cases my kennel name must follow. The S.V. naming convention is still the best to keep track of litters, as far as I am concerned. Bob-O

There is a provision in the AKC registration rules in very fine print somewhere that does address the fact that breeders can pick the dog's registered name by contract with the buyer. AKC also allows the addition of the buyer's kennel name to a dog already registered.

Warrior that is a real complicated question/answer. It would ALL depend on who owns / leases the female at the time of breeding and then at the time of whelp. In Europe the Kennel name system is pretty much defined by the "breeder" (owner of the female) but then there is the allowance of leases. In the US it is even more complicated and allows such exceptions as to allow people that take ownership by court orders/settlement or private contract if so agreed to name the dog without the actual "Kennel Name" of the breeder. What specifically are you questioning?

EDD In Afgan, That is how I do it also.
