How long does it typically take to get papers back on an imported dog?

by Kougar on 08 May 2006 - 01:05

from the country of origin??? from AKC????

by hillbillysheperds on 08 May 2006 - 02:05

Both From Germany and then AKC

If it is a grown dog, the papers should accompany the dog when it comes from Germany. If it is a puppy, they could accompany the puppy or may be 6-8 weeks following sale of puppy. To get the AKC registration you have to request a Bescheinigung(Certificate of ownership transfer)from the SV in Germany that may take up to a month(nominal fee associated with it), then you send a COPY of that document with the application of registration to the AKC and wait about another month or so for the final AKC registration. Send all COPIES to the AKC when you apply for registration. Stephen

Thanks for the responses and Info. We were told that it could take up to 6 months after we had received our dog,( Info provided from the Kennel owner that sold us a sick dog) Please keep the info coming. We are new to this but absolutely love the GSD breed from Germany

I have heard of papers taking that long to be processed in Europe - Belgium especially....AKC is pretty quick comparatively if you have all the correct documentation and copies, and the forms are filled in correctly.

When I imported an adult female, the seller handed me her original papers immediately, informed the SV in Germany of the change of ownership. I then applied for the Bescheinigung which took 2 weeks for receipt in the US. I submitted a copy of the pink papers and the Bescheinigung to the AKC and it took 2 weeks to get my AKC paperwork on this dog. The Bescheinigung is a very important document but it is usual that the purchaser arrange for this document.

The breeder is insulting the SV when saying the paperwork would take 6 months! The SV works very fast and accurate (just the way Stephen pointed out). Looks like Sunshine was on top of things, congratulations, I must recommend HillBilly to do the same. Let me give you the e-mail of the lovely Sabine Leib at the SV-office: akc@schaeferhunde.de She will help you out. By change of ownership, one could contact Andrea Mix or Petra Weinelt, both at: hd@schaeferhunde.de Another story of a sick puppy sold abroad. Another bad experience. If this is the same pup as in the other thread (with the worms), I would follow Stephen's thinking. The pup might have been all over the world really, before it got to you. Hope it will make it allright. Do keep us informed.

I have imported a 8 week puppy in Dec. 05. The SV paperwork and Bescheinigung came here last week of April 06. I dont feel their was any delay on the part of SV office processing the papers. The Breeder plays the major role in processing the registration papers. The adult imports I have received always came with their pink papers, bescheinigung and health records and were received with the dog. regards Mike

I have never heard of the Bescheinigung coming with the dog. That is something that the BUYER usually initiates. I have ALWAYS had to reqest(as the buyer) the Bescheinigung.
